Olympic Dumbbell Handles

in my home gym i use an olympic barbell and plates, and standard sized dumbbells.
i doubt to switch to one size and replace the db’s for olympic db’s.
They seem to be very long so i wonder if they are comfortable to use.
Anyone have experience with oly db’S?

The Olympic-style rotation feels smooth, as you might expect, for most exercises. Make sure you factor in the extra time it takes to load/unload each dumbbell between sets. This alone makes me want to get another pair of handles, but I keep putting it off.

For shoulder presses/chest presses, it’ll take a little getting used to not smacking them together, since they’re longer than dumbbells you’re used to. But after a few sessions, you’ll barely notice unless your reps are super-sloppy.

For dumbbell rows/upright rows/high pulls, you might have an issue when loading them with larger plates, since your forearms will be hitting into the plates during the movement.

One-arm dumbbell snatches are brutal (in a good way).

To hit your forearms in a new way, try gripping one side where you’d load the plates and leveraging the dumbbell (similar to the pic above) with both a front and back grip, as well as supinations and pronations.

Thanks a lot Chris!
Do you also use them for curls?

Of course you can. Just remember that anytime the weight is vertical (hammer curls, some triceps extensions, etc.), you want to make sure the clips are very secure, especially if you’re going moderately-heavy.

I have a pair of thick-grip olympic dumbbell handles from newyorkbarbells.com and like them a lot. They are 1 7/8 inch in diameter. Ironmind also makes a pair of thick grip variety, but they are much more expensive.

ok.
for curls, like incline db curls i thought they would be very long.
I’m gonna get me a pair, another good reason to buy some more smaller olympic plates also.
Thanks again.
