I’m currently strength training for wrestling and came across an olympic lifting club. I was wondering if it would be beneficial to learn the olympic lifts or spend my strength training sessions focusing on the other major lifts that are easier to learn(squat, deadlift, power clean, bench, overhead press)? I have about two years of lifting experience along with athletics all my life. I need to work on my technique for the previously stated lifts and will, but I’m not sure if I should also work on the olympic lifts.
Yes to O-lifts. The number one type of training you can do to benefit any sport, especially grappling sports.
You are spoiled to have an O-lifting gym near you so utilize it. Also, you will get training in all those other lifts you mentioned (besides maybe bench, depending on the coach) in an O-lifting gym. They are all part of the deal. Do not pass this up.
I cannot say enough about O-lifting and benefiting grappling/combat sports. You will see the difference when you go for high throws and pickups, both of which become monstrously easier once you have a strong snatch or clean. Also you will notice far less shoulder injuries after putting in some time.
Helps your grip strength too, which IMO is a number one tool in wrestling. your hands are what connect you toy our opponent. Without good grip strength all the other strength wont matter.
