25 days since last workout, if you can call swinging a workout.
In an attempt to not get too sore on my first day back, I did 7 sets of 5 and 3 sets of 8 for 59 on the 44lb kettlebell with timed 30 second breaks. did nothing but breathe hard during the rests.
My funky hip imbalance has caused me to have some soreness already in the right glute streaming down the inner hamstring to the knee. and that’s just an hour after the deed.
tonight I’ll do some hip bridges and pull throughs and try to get some blood through it.
295, so I have kept off what I lost after new years, even in the absence of exercise.
You liken the keetlebells so much cause they’re closer in form what we throw in HGs or because the swinging movemnet give you more cardio with the workout? You looking at doing or officiating any games in the spring?
Joe: Can’t do any big-deal squat stuff until my hip is better. Its been killing me for over a year, so I don’t think smolov is in my future.
Kev: thanks. its only a good goal if I can hit it.
Harry: I like kettlefagging for the conditioning. Doing the swings every morning plus staying on the diet works wonders, so that’s why I do it. Unless I want to go to Idaho (which I’ve been known to do) there aren’t any festival games locally until May. I am still harboring a hope that I can throw come summertime. My plan is to judge at as many festival games as I can, and maybe throw some at our club games. I figure if I can squat a set of 5 at 300 without pain, I can prolly start throwing

Hopefully your hip will get straight. Though those KB swings can’t be easy with a bum hip.
the bum hip is causing many troubleses. I’ve missed 2 days because of it. yesterday I just rested. This morning i came in hoping to swing a little, but I couldn’t get my hip loose, despite 20 minutes of rolling and balling. maybe tomorrow.
I can sit okay, but I think that’s because I can’t engage my glutes properly.
My right glute doesn’t work right, so the hip flexor is helping on movements that the hip flexor shouldn’t be helping on. I can’t get the hip flexor to turn off, or the glute to turn on. Well, I can, that’s what I’m working on now. Doing all sorts of glute activation stuff, and stretching/grinding/balling the hip flexor and try to turn it off.
I’ll get it figured out. But I think its gonna take awhile, and that makes me sad.

Successful Kettlekwearing
10 sets of 6 at 44, timed rests of 30 seconds.
I had to do them without the explosive hip pop at the top as a precautionary measure. Right (bad) hip is a little tight, but nothing like the other day.
aggressively stretching the hip flexor, doing lots of 1 leg hip thrusts, and adding x-band walks seems to be doing the trick.
My end goal for kettlefagging, which might take a couple years, is to be able to do 15 sets of 15 with the 108 pounder. As soon as i can hit 15x15 at this weight, I’ll go up the 2 pood, which is 72 lbs and start over again.
In the meantime, I’ll be happy if I can consistently kettlekwear 4 mornings each week.

Same problem here, except the hip flexor is crazy-lazy too. I’m doing all sorts of faggy-looking stuff that I don’t write about to try and make it right. My empathies to you.

back at it
10x7 with 30 second rests
stretched hip flexor in between sets to keep it inhibited. Getting a big hip pop at the top of the movement engages the hip flexor, so no bueno. trying to get a good squeeze of the glute and not pop hard enough to wake up the flexor.
hip is getting better and stronger. I need to lay a base with this stuff before I can start squatting again. these problems didn’t start up until I stopped squatting. My hope is to be able to throw again by june.
2/10/12
kettlebell swings, 44lb kb, 10x 9, 30 sec rests.
getting pretty close to where I laid off in early january. Except in january i was doing other stuff between sets so the rests were longer.
so, joe and anyone else reading, what do you think: should I go back to doing planks and stuff between sets, or should I try to keep the rest periods to 30 seconds?

Seems to me that if you’re doing stuff between sets, then it can only serve to keep the metabolism revved. But walking around with the KB’s pressed overhead might be just as effective and you wouldn’t have to put them down…
…says the guy (me) who does NO conditioning whatsoever.
Thanks OG and Tony. we have 1 for and 1 against. I guess I’ll just avoid making a decision.
In the meantime, KettleQueer
2/14/12
10 sets of 10 with the 44.
Back to where I left off in January. weight is up a hair at 293, but that’s just temporary bloating. and lower than it was in january.
I have noticed that I have no glute development. this lack of gadonk is prolly why i never hit a double bodyweight squat. its also why i have this hip flexor taking over for the weakling glute problem. I need to get into the weight room and work on that.

7x11 was planning on 11x11, but just didn’t have it. feeling weak and beat down. may have been the late night tuesday followed by the 15 hour workday yesterday. Or I could just be a pussy.
291, so no loss this week, but no gain either which is kind of cool
Oh, yeah, got my Highland Games schedule from the club. doesn’t seem like we have as many events as last year. But, I know there are some games in Idaho that are not mentioned on the schedule. My plan is judge at all the scottish festival games, and hip permitting, throw at the club games. this is because I get paid to judge at the festival games, and at the club games we just always yell “scratch” no matter what the thrower does.
