A pro football player, lineman, lives around these parts sumwhere’s. Had a photospread of him in the newspaper pushin his Caddy Escalade up and down his driveway for exercise. long driveway, too. Never tried pushin a vehicle that wasn’t stalled. The neighbors allready think I’m crazy so might give it a try.

I will be curious to see how this turns out. I would be wary about wooden skis though, wear out super fast. [/quote]
Yes, but the extra friction means I don’t have to have to tote around as much weight in the car. On the other hand, it would be easy to get some sheet metal bent around the skis. since I’m using floor flanges, there is no real good way to attach metal skis without wood underneath.
Like most of my little schemes, this will probably come to naught, but its fun to think about.
Nice work
why do holidays make families act up
I think Heavy thrower posted something about using a plastic cutting board on his sled or prowler-
to stop it from grinding
kevin, i remember reading about that, to minimize the prowler howl. I’ll have to give that some thought.
As I suspected, I did not train over christmas. other than that, I had an awesome christmas, the best ever.
hoping to get some snatch grip deads tomorrow
Prowler run over you?
prowler did not run over me, jest bin bizzy
Fat Man Manifesto
Had a great holiday, first time ever. Usually I’m pretty grinchy when it comes to the holidays, but a reduction in intermarital arguing (which, being the fella, I can never win anyway) led to a pretty fantastic holiday season. My wife and son and I stayed at a little resort called Zermatt up in the Heber area for New Years. We cross country skied at Soldier Hollow where they had the 2002 Olympic Nordic Events including the Biathlon.
there was a new years eve party, which included a really great swing band made up of high school seniors. I didn’t drink, for no particular reason. My son is a great piano player, and has been playing sax for a couple years, and he really enjoyed seeing some kids just a few years older than him “gettin it”. Lots of the great swing standards, but sadly, only one funk tune (gotta love a big band playing funk. tower of power, EW&F, Widespread Panic, you know…)
As I have been snivelling here the past 6 months about my new right hip problems and my old and constant left knee problems, you may be wondering how I managed to go cross country skiing. First off, I only managed the first 1.5 hours. By then my hip was really hurting. It felt like it was about 1/2" out of the socket, which is how it always feels. Luckily, it was only 5Ã?°F (yes canadians, that’s like 0Ã?° Kelvin or whatever) so my skiing partners wanted to go warm up and drink hot chocolate.
After we warmed up, Erik (my son, not my wife, PLEASE try and pay attention) was pretty disappointed that I couldn’t go back out with them for another hour. He reminded me that I promised I would be able to ski with him in January. I told him that I had been real undisciplined with my rehab, and I was sorry, but that IN 3 WEEKS I’LL BE ABLE TO SKI THE WHOLE TIME.
So, the gauntlet was thrown. This promise gave my wife an excuse to play diet cop, which she always does anyway, but now she has my promise to bludgeon me with.
While they were out skiing, I came up with my 21 day transformation plan. I didn’t start it til Monday 1/3, so in my mind the 21 days ends 1/24. However, I will probably be expected to ski on Sunday 1/23. I decided that I would have to get some new habits fast, and that I needed to make some reasonable, sustainable changes, as opposed to temporary spastic huge sweeping changes that are destined from the beginning to fail.
So first I decided, well, I should walk every day. I was planning on doing this months ago, but never really stuck to it. So, step 1, walk daily. What else should I do? well, there is that issue with my pesky knee and atrophied quads on the left side. I have not been good about getting into a place where I can do my silly step ups and stuff, so I thought about hindu squats. because you get your knees so far over the toes, it really works the quads, and really hits the VMO hard. It also should help clear some of the scar tissue in my knee from the increased range of motion. so I decided I should work those in somehow with my walk, and do it every day.
3d every day thing is not cheat on my diet. I have decided to go psuedo caveman. I am eating meats and veggies. nothing from grains. I will need to get plenty of protein which I was not doing last wierd diet. I decided to hit 250g protein a day, since 250 is my interim weight goal (no, not in 21 days). so, I have 2 shakes a day with 75g protein, and 3 meals consisting of 2 cups of frozen veggies (measured frozen) and 4 oz chicken. 12 oz chicken is 100g protein.
that also keeps my veggie intake higher, which is good for my arthritis and general health. first shake of the day has a cup of berries in it, second shake has a couple spoons of Metamucil (like an orange julius freight train cleaning your colon).
Then comes the not-every-day stuff. 5/3/1 stuff on the 2 days/week schedule. Also, still try to get into the gym to do step ups and other rehabbish type stuff on non lifting days. But getting strong again is a must. On week 2, I will add in beginning olympic lifts again. I will do these in The Lab (my garage), twice per week.
Starting week 2 or week 3, I will occasionally add kettlebell shit and car pushing to my walking, for real conditioning, as opposed to the walking which is just to get my ass up and out. If I try to add it all in too soon, I’ll fail again, so I need to be smart about it. I also need to not hurt my hip or knee too bad, cuz that will set me back by weeks.
So,
Daily:
Walk
Hindu Squats
Stay on Diet
Floss (I am lazy about this, so I figured since I am ingraining new habits, not talking myself out of flossing at night would be good)
Not Daily:
Lift
Rehab
Condition
I have some goals to go along with this. actually, i have a very many too many goals, but since they all tend to feed the overall goal, i should be okay.
2011 Goals (and you should feel free to hold me to these):
Improve my Highland Throws to achieve a “B” ranking (this means lots of improvements in all throws)
Snatch 200 (with really good form)
Clean and Jerk 240
Squat 450
Deadlift 500 (I hope this isn’t my goal forever, it was my 2010 goal…)
Weigh (only) 250 lbs
be able to ski all day (kind of have to hit this one by the end of March, skiing is not so good in April)
I will post daily for the 21 days, so you guys can hold me accountable. Feel free to holler at me if I start getting away from my goals.
Be Harder
old lardass
This is going to work.
Hey, I wasn’t done yet. What do you figure you will have to throw to get the B ranking?
Looks very doable.
Now adapt and overcome.
looks like a good plan for a great objective
You’ve obviously put a lot of thought into these lifestyle changes. I admire that.

in order to “move up” to B you need to at least 5 of the following (the only standard for caber is that you be able to pick, control, and safely roll/discard a non-cooperative caber away from everyone else)
22# braemer, 28’
16# open stone, 32’
28# WFD, 44’
42# WFD, 31’
56# WFD, 21
16# hammer, 79’
22# hammer, 63’
20# sheaf, 20’
16# sheaf, 23’
42# WOB, 13’
56# WOB, 11’
This means I will have to throw the PIG, but I think I’m strong enough for that. just need to get my learn (and lean) on. I’ll wait until I’m all growed up (50) before I start worrying about the masters world records.
joe, I will crush them and drive them before me
Pete, I am hoping I can generate the sticktoitiveness necessary to be successful
Snap, thanks, i did spend some time mapping it out in my head, keeping up with it will be the hard part

Go get 'em MJ, I have confidence in you.
MJ, great goals. I’ve never been in a meet where they’ve had lower than a “B” or having to get a rating to be a “B”. Those are some good numbers and I think they may be for getting an “A” rating. Might want to check that. Either way, go for.
MJ,sounds like some good goals. Just keep grinding and you’ll make them all.
Thanks Guys!

i was going to test weighted situps so I can do them 5/3/1 style on deadlift days, but hip flexor acted up and I had to quit. Learned something new on good mornings. I am doing all the work with my non-injured left. this makes sense, I have a serious imbalance in my glutes and erectors due to babying my bad (right) hip. I walked while firmly (and lovingling) gripping my ass with both hands, and realized that my right glutes dont work the same as my left when I walk. sadly, I could not talk any of the cute resolutionists to grab my ass for confirmation. so, I went into the cardio room and did some 1 leg rdl with only bodyweight. I think I will be keeping this as part of my rehab to try and strengthen my hip. I will also be keeping the GMs for awhile to strengthen my erectors and glutes as well. I love learning new stuff about how much i suck.

Harry, unless there are a ton of both Bs and Cs I think they just let the Cs throw with Bs. I added the move up’s for both A and Pro:
22# braemer, 28’, A-31, Pro-38
16# open stone, 32’ A-36, Pro-45
28# WFD, 44’, A-52, Pro-67
42# WFD, 31’, A-n/a, Pro-n/a
56# WFD, 21, A-26, Pro-35
16# hammer, 79’, A-90, Pro-114
22# hammer, 63’, A-73, Pro-95
20# sheaf, 20’, A-22, Pro-25
16# sheaf, 23’, A-26, Pro-29
42# WOB, 13’, A-n/a, Pro-n/a
56# WOB, 11’, A-12, Pro-14
Again, you have to acheive 5 of the standards to be eligible for a move up. As you know, only old guys like us and girls throw the 42’, A’s and Pros do not.
Unless somebody begs me not to, I’ll be throwing in the old folks this year, so while my goal is to throw B level distances in at east 5 events by the end of the season, I wont be throwing with the kids. our club does have several events where the old men are forced to throw the pig, even if we don’t want to. my best pig over bar is only 9’6".
I am so excited to throw this year.
