Older Larder Ass

Def top ten- good job.

congrats to your son

When Disney woops your ass, you know, that’s like gettin owned by Tinker Bell. Hope Cinderella didn’t make you her bitch or nothing:)
Kid’s a swimmer with potential. Good deal. Welcome back.

Steve, If you’ve never been to disney, you have to go. its pretty awesome. its even better if you go with a kid under 13 (before they have to act like they don’t care). The rides are fun, the people are interesting, and its good times.

Kevin, thanks for the top 10 props. i feel so much better about myself now.

mmmmmm tinker bell and cinderella. I’d tap that ass… The kid loves swimming, i hope he loves it forever. sometimes i worry that he hasnt had much experience with team sports, because I think there are valuable lessons about being part of a team. But the good thing is he’s learning to put out early in life.

I tried to lift today, but I couldn’t drag my ass out of the office.

I don’t want you guys to worry that I’m becoming a kettlebell-boy. but since I can’t do most things that people do for conditioning, i got some of pavel’s books, and read some of the stuff dan john’s written, and decided to give it a try. the workout is called “program minimum”. 2 days each week you do swings for 12 min, then 2 other days you do get ups for 5 min. doesn’t sound like much, but last night I loaded my bell with 37 lbs and did some swings. it kicked my ass. I did it again this morning, but I did it a little differently. the goal was to do 10 sets of ladders of 3. I was doing 1-arm swings, so 3 left, 3 right, 2 left, 2 right, 1 left, 1 right. I did 10 sets with 50 sec rests between ladders. took about 13 minutes, so the time was right. even though it wasn’t all that much weight, it did my erectors and hammies so bad I couldn’t get out of the office.

I can see that this can help my conditioning if I can stick with it. I’ll try to do it every morning. starting at 10x3, I can increase the ladders, do bigger ladders, shorten rest periods, etc. Plus, once I can do some decent weight on the swings, it should help my weight-for-height.

keep y’all posted

Actually, kettlebells will probably serve you well for the sport specific side of HG. If you don’t have a meet for a while, i.e., off season, stick with the big explosive lifts.
Some people are drawn to team sports, some aren’t. My boys were really into swimming and martial arts. Swim teams have the advantage of some team camaraderie but it’s mostly all individual achievement. There are the relays of course and if you ever want to see a group of in shape guys try some water polo.
I’ve always had a perverse attraction for Tinker Bell, too.

there is nothing perverse about it, the Tink is HAWT!

Yeah, I have closed the door on the real oly lifts until the winter. not enough time for everything I want to do. But I got Tommy Kono’s book on the oly lifts, and I will start getting into that when the snow flies. couple more months is all…

One of Erik’s cousins plays water polo for cal poly san luis obispo, and swims. he is a stud.

I rolled the heck out of my hammiez before bed last night, and they only hurt half as bad today, which honestly, is still pretty bad. a week or 2 and I should be used to the work though. I am doing the kettlebell mostly for conditioning and fat loss (hopefully) but anything that makes my p-chain light up like that has got to help my deadlift, and prolly my squat as well.

I usually only do a shoulder warmup on dip days, but I did the full squat warmup, took some extra time. nearly felt human by the time I finished. Kmac, I did OHS with no weight for many as part of the warm up, trying to get some flexibility and all that.

Not bad considering my overall feeling of unhealthyness and 3-4 weeks away from the gym. I feel good, but a little spent. weak as a kitten too, but I expected that. also, I weighed 293, and after a vacation, anything under 295 is good.

i haven’t had a chance to practice throws or work the kettlebell, but I am going to the highland games in logan this weekend anyway. I did not preregister, so I am not absolutely sure I will be able to throw, but it will be fun to be there. I can’t imagine turnout so high that they won’t let an old fatguy play.

I can’t wait to win the lotterty, because all my jobs interfere with my fun.

damn…293. how tall are you One with a Ass of Lard Who is also Old?? i’m hoping to get back up to about 280 but i’m only 5’8".

6 feet even. youd think I could get down to 250 easy.

If I was as stong as you meatwinkle, I’d feel okay about myself at 300lbs. But since my lifts are about a third of yours, I guess I’m too fat.

I had kettlebell workout number 2 today. it was the same as last time. swings, 10 sets of 3-2-1 with each hand with 1 minute rest. so, I got a whopping 60 reps with my little 38 lb bell. what a pussy.

But here’s whats worse. I tried to do get-ups today, which are part of the program. Have you ever been so drunk that after you puke into the gutter, even if you have a police car to lean on as you get up, you just can’t stand? that’s how I look doing get-ups.

I suppose that means that doing them will eventually do something good for me, but I don’t know if I can stand the humiliation of doing them. Certainly not in public.

I am in nowhere near the pain as last week, so I must have gotten a little stronger at the exercise. tomorrow is deadlifts, so if I can do okay on that, it means I am past the hump. I am going to try doing kettlebell swings 4-5 times per week, gradually working up to 13 minutes without rest.

Unfortunately, yes.
You’ll get back. Just keep at it.

i have no idea what a “get up” is but the way i get up is to roll over on my belly and slowly get up onto my knees and hands and then look for something very solid to pull myself back up to my feet. are we talking about the same thing??

Thanks Harry.

Scott, it is an exercise called a Turkish Get UP. You probably knew this, so I look (more) like an idiot explaining, but my OCD demands it. you lay on your back and hold a weight or kettlebell in one hand, then stand up while holding the poundage aloft. supposed to be good for you. the kettlefag thing I am doing requires it, and I do like to follow my coaches blindly. anyhoo, i’ll prolly do them in my garage early in the morning. who knew, doing kettlefag get ups is the same as banging hookers and scoring blow, best done out of the site of other people.

there was an article on the get up in testosterone mag a couple weeks ago.

8/24/10 5/3/1 deadlift(5) cycle 11

260x5
300x4
340x1/2

front squat 135x 5/6/7/8
pulldown abz 140x 8/9/10/10

wow, i felt good except for the terribly weak part. should be 5 at 300, but didn’t have it. put on the belt, only got one a 340 (11 for

pr). took the belt off and got a double. this 3-ply belt, awesome as it is, is too much belt for a non-assisted lifter, or at least too

much for me. I will buy an EFS retro belt or something similarly thin, and try to sell my uberbelt to one of the local gearwhores (no

offense petes).

the accessory work was equally unimpressive, although i did feel good about keeping erect during the fronties.

His Jimness (all bow down) has said that we should expect to have some difficulty on dead and squat when we start conditioning. the way my

ass hurts, I will assume that is the case. after a few weeks, hopefully, my fatness will have adapted to the conditioning work, and my gym

numbers will start to increase (and hopefully my weight numbers decrease).

oddly, I saw people doing real lifts today. a guy doing RDLs with pretty good form (he’s the guy I’ve schooled on gm’s). a guy squatting in

one of the other power racks, and a guy doing power cleans in the other power rack. didn’t make much sense to do them in the rack like that,

but he was hang cleaning 225 for sets of 8, and I have never cleaned 225 even once, so I was impressed anyway - plus he was smaller than me,

which just made me feel bad about myself.

I can’t beleive how excited I am for this weekend. the highland games on saturday should be a blast, even though I haven’t practiced. the

guy putting on the games said he wants me to show up at 730, before the other throwers get there, so he can teach me how not to kill anybody

(including myself) with the caber, since I’ve never tossed one before. the family will pick me up at the field at dinner time, and we’ll go

to a friend of mine’s house for dinner and a sleepover. should be big fun.

Yes its going to be fun. I’ll probably show up around 8. I’ll assume the guy learning how not to kill people with a caber is you. As soon as the wife gets home we’re starting the 8 or so hour drive. Should be there late tonight. Can’t wait until tomorrow morning. See you there.

Tear it up this weekend

for a larger type guy doing overhead squats is allot of work nice work.

mj - have some fun this weekend throwing stuff around!

Hey y’all,

Thanks for all the support. I got to meet Carl Darby, and he is an awesome guy, and a great coach. I was really floundering in the stone and the weight for distance, and he helped quite a bit with my form. Carl took second overall in his class, behind the head of my club, who holds several world records. Jeff Loosle set a new world record for the weight over bar in the masters 50 class, at 18’9". by comparison, my best was 12 feet.

I didn’t take note of my distances, but none of them were very good. I will post them when I get them from the organizer.

I did about what I expected with no form practice - DFL (dead fucking last) in all events. I received some good form tips and instruction, which should help me practice. I have another games on Sept 12, and I hope to better all my throws, and to get a score in the caber and the sheaf.

I got no score on the caber, because I couldn’t toss it. I lost control of it each of my three attempts. I got no score on the sheaf, because the starting height was 14’, and I could not clear the bar (these are the 2 events that I had absolutely no practice in). the caber turned out to be far more difficult from a technique standpoint, although it weighed only 85 lbs (i was thinking it would weigh over 150 for some reason). now, if I can find an appropriate lodgepole, I know what to practice.

I competed in the Masters 40, so Carl was in the class above me. but they had both groups of old farts throwing with the girls (several of which beat me in each throw). My weight for distance was especially lame, and Carl pulled me aside and showed me something before my second throw on the light weight, i practiced it twice, the second practice throw i knocked myself over, but when I took my throw, I beat my previous throw by about 10 feet, so it was some pretty serious help.

I had a blast, and I am now officially hooked on Highland Games. Thanks again to Carl to coming to our fair state, beating our old farts, and trying to teach me to throw. I hope to return the favor next year and come out to one of the Highland Games they have in Las Vegas.

My only injuries were sunburn and a tweaked back. I tweaked it fighting to control a caber that I should have just dropped. it’s the kind of tweak that is not uncommon in weight training, so while it was a little uncomfortable, it did not affect my throwing. it is already all better.

my little family joined me after the games with some old friends that live in the area, and we had a sleepover and visited the local zoo.

it was a weekend of great fellowship and fun. if any of you other old farts are looking for something new to take up some of your time and attention, i have to suggest giving the highland games a try. I also hope to get the opportunity to meet more of you guys and gals at events etc in the future.

Wow, that sounds like a great time. Thanks for sharing.

getting out there and having fun is what it’s all about

how cool to meet Carl to boot!

Very proud of you little bro. You got out there and went for it. DFL? Not among the one’s who sit on their ass and are afraid to get out and take a shot at something different. You’re way ahead of them. You’ll improve. Gar own teed.
BTW, my meet this Saturday has 1 master’s class, 40 and up. Pretty sure I’m at the top of the “and up”. Get to play with the youngens. Goo times.

John, you did a great job. It was a pleasure meeting and throwing with you. You have good power, and with a bit of technique work, your marks will improve significantly. Glad the back tweak was minor.
