my nephew is a navy corpsman (medic) serving with Marines in Afghanistan. i just found out that 2 weeks prior to cycling home, he hit an IED and has major damage to his lower legs. He is in Germany, soon to be sent to Walter Reed. I don’t know just how bad the damage is, but his mom said his leg was “shattered”. she is flying to maryland today, so I assume that my nephew is due there in the next day or two.
I am really angry about this. and sad
Worked hand in hand with many corpman and medics. Rambo gets all the glory but these are the bravest people I’ve ever known. Do you know if he’s at Landstuhl? Excellent damn facility. Was cycled thru there several times myself. Tell him thanks and get better from one who’s been there.
Actually, most of my information was wrong. He is at NNMC in Bethesda, been there since saturday.
I just spoke to him. Both heels and ankles irrepairably[sic] crushed, open tibia fracture on the right leg. No infection. The docs say they can save his feet, but he will have very little range of motion. If he goes with prosthesis, he will be able to walk in a couple months. he is a very active kid (he’s 30) does lots of skiing and snowboarding. He is 90% sure as of right now that he will go with the prosthesis. It was great to talk to him and hear him in such great spirits. His mom and brother are already there, and his dad gets there tonight.
My best friend from college is a Colonel in the Marines (I tricked him into joining and gave him his 2d salute), and I asked him to look after my nephew, which he is doing. They would probably take good care of him anyway, but having a “sea daddy” with some push never hurts.
Thanks for caring
