Thanks to all for the input on the 5/3/1 program. I’m back on it. But like any program I think it necessary to cycle in and out of the program to keep it fresh.

Congrats on the weight loss. I think I see some abs peaking through.[/quote]

Thanks K.
I think its important that we try to emulate our heroes as much as possible. And what says “i wanna be you” more than going through someones trash a couple times per week?

6/23/09 DRAGGY-SLED
yo
I pulled my bigger Laramie sled for a mile with 20 lbs in it. I spaced my watch at the hotel. I am guessing around 25 minutes or so.

In Laramie, I drag on asphalt. in SLC, i drag on grooved concrete. They grip the tire differently. The concrete is in the medium area of difficulty, sometimes it grabs more than others. on asphalt, it grips like a dog, then I hit a patch of pebbles and its like there is no sled. plus its a heavier tire.

My original plan was to drag wed morning and deadlift wed nite. i never drag on deadlift day. i decided it would be stupid, so I stayed up all night posting on the meathead boards.

Deadlifting with 100s tomorrow. I hope to not disgrace the holiest of icons in the Temple of Big.

6/24/09 5/3/1 Deadlift With 100s (5) 3d cycle
5x 135/205/255/290 (note that I used the 100s for 255 and higher. made my week)
330x 5

Accessory Deadlift 1a
225x 10/10/9

Supersetted with decline sit-ups 1b
10/10/5

And left knee extensions 1c
30x 5/5/0

Shrugs 2 (used the 100s for this as well)
315x 15/15

I weighed on a questionable scale, and appear to lost another couple pounds on this trip, even though I am out of ketosis. Happy times.

Even though I had to cut the training session short, it was a good one. I decided not to go for rep maxes on the 5 days in 5/3/1, at least until my work capacity is somewhat improved. The first 2 sets of my accessory supersets went well. On the 3rd set, I couldnt keep my arch on the dead, and decided it was time to quit. I remembered to bring my straps, so I hit a couple sets on shrugs. Gotta get the YOKE. You know.

I was having a little trouble recovering between sets on the accessories. Was having some trouble catching my breath because of the altitude, and my weak fatness. I would have gotten all 5 sets at my regular elevation.

You know, I really love lifting weights, trying to go heavy and get stronger. I cant really imagine not doing it. I lifted when I was younger, but I never took it this seriously. I used to travel a lot, and I never went to this much trouble to train on a trip. Guess Im almost grown up.

I found out last week why my little boy (11) does not want me to lift in competition. He told me that since I work 2 jobs, I shouldnt spend a Saturday lifting when I could be with him. It made him feel like I didnt want to be with him. I cried a little, and I felt like a selfish asshole. So, no competition lifting until I can make do on just 1 job.

Lifting is still the most important thing that I do for myself, I just cant let it be the most important thing in my life. I will lift in competition, cuz it looks like a ton of fun, and Id like a chance to hang out with other people as passionate about getting stronger as I am. Its just gonna have to wait for a year is all. Should have all my poop in one group by then. Should also be both lighter and stronger.
Tomorrow, Ill get up at six, drag the sled, drop it at the office, then pack the car for the 6 hour drive home. Cuz I couldnt imagine not doing it.

John

these last two posts get to me.
thank you.
you are a good man.

Train for the next few years then worry about competing. By the time he’s a teenager he’ll either want you to teach him how to pump up his arms to get the girls or be too busy chasing the girls to be bothered by dad. Enjoy the years where you’re still his biggest hero.

I am back in the People’s Republic of Utah. I had planned on dragging the sled a little this morning, but I was up until midnight so I passed today. My son decided that a ping pong table would be the perfect father’s day gift, so when I got home yesterday, we went to the store and bought one.

Now, while I cant build a river dock like Hel-dances-with-snakes-320, I consider myself a moderately handy guy. but the ping pong table kept me up til midnight putting it together. But, now I have one more thing to do with my son.

bench tomorrow

Hey guys, thanks for all the support!

I did drag my sled thursday morning before I left Laramie. sled + 30 .6 mile 23:20. I think the altitude kicked my butt on this. I was feeling pretty beat up from deadlifting, and felt totally drained. Still feeling a little drained, but I think its a combo of up late last night, and training at 7k feet for a couple days.

Its hard to find anyone to talk to about this stuff, and I feel good that you guys participate with me!

Hahaha… Hel-dances-with-snakes… now that, is some damn funny!!

And that’s the best thing about buying and assembling your own father’s day gift…

Have fun benching!

6/26/09 5/3/1 Bench (5)3d cycle
5x 45/95/135/165/195/225
255x 2

Did nothing else. I was supposed to get 5 at 255. I thought that my shoulders were going to explode, and I felt a ton of fatigue. This was very disappointing to me.

Here is what I think. Since I changed my diet and stopped taking carbs, that has screwed up my recovery. I used to have great recovery, cuz I would add 50g carbs (1/2 cup oatmeal) to my post training shake. Since starting atkins, I havenâ??t been doing that. Well, at the risk of losing weight more slowly, I have decided to start adding carbs back in on the post training shake, to see if my recovery comes up. I started this right after this abortion of a training session, went to the store, and dropped some steel cut oats in my shake for 25g carb. Today is squat, and it has been 5 days since my DL session, so I guess we will see what we will see.

On the other hand, I could just be a pussy.

Whine Harder!

Amen. My kids are out of the house now. 2 of the 3 are military. I miss them a ton. Would never admit it though.

D’oh!..Damn…!

7/1/09 5/3/1 Military (3) 3rd cycle
5x 45/95
3x 120/140
155x 2 (should have been 3 minimum!)

2a Accessory military, tri-supersetted with
115x 10
105x 10/9
100x 10
95x 10

2b Left Knee Extensions, tri-supersetted with
60x 10/10/10/10/12

2c Pull Downs
195x 10/10/10/10/10

Well, this took 45 minutes. This was really disappointing to me. Not only did I not hit the reps on the money set, the BBB accessories took a nose dive as well. Well, you cant serve 2 masters, and I decided that fat loss was the most important thing I had going for the next couple months. I will continue to use my current training maxes til the end of the cycle. That way I will know how much to drop my maxes by.

Instead of post session shakes with added carbs, I will just eat real food. Today I had some chicken with a couple cups steamed veggies. Not a tremendous carb load, but they may help. I will also try to add another day between training sessions for some extra recovery time. If it doesnt help, Ill just lower my maxes sooner.

Fuck it, I am lowering my training maxes now, 10lbs upper, 20lbs lower, and Ill keep the same training schedule. We will see how that goes for the next couple weeks. At least Iâ??ll be able to hit the reps. I hope. Well, I am hoping to drag the sled tomorrow, so we will see how that goes.
