Old Guy Strength

I agree. I took about 10-15 years off from my early 20s to mid 30s. I was a beast in college.

Bench:
135 x 10, 185 x 5, 225 x 3, 245 x 1, 315 x 3, 340 x 3, 370 x 3, 225 x 10

Crossover (mid-chest):
4 sets x 15 reps x 50

That’s all I had time for this morning. My daughter’s tennis coach is playing in a pickle ball tournament today, and he wants us to watch him.

For years have struggled with uneven bench form with my left side lagging behind my right. I’ve tried several things to fix it. Robbie has me now moving my left hand in about a half inch. I have done the opposite in the past, but he thinks moving it in will do the trick. He compared it to torque on a screw driver. I’m giving it a shot, since nothing else has worked.

That’s a bloody solid bench mate, well done.

Thanks

Bench:
135 x 10, 185 x 5, 225 x 3, 245 x 1, 320 x 3, 365 x 2, 390 x 1, 225 x 17, 225 x 5, 225 x 3, 225 x 3

390 was probably my strongest set. I felt really good and locked in. Robbie then said he wanted 20 reps out of me at 225. I told him I was not sure I had that in me at that point. We agreed on 17. The last one was a battle all the way. The two sets of 225 x 3, were done with about 90 seconds rest.

I head out of town tomorrow night for a weeks worth of training for work. I’ll need to figure out some place to train there, or try the hotel exercise room. In addition my daughter wants to tour Washington State University next Saturday, so my training will be not up to par next week.

Squats:
135 x 10, 225 x 5, 275 x 3, 315 x 1, 365 x 3, 405 x 3, 435 x 3, 315 x 10

Zerchers:
225 x 5
275 x 3
315 x 1
335 x 1

Leg Extensions:
4 sets x 10 reps x 160

Leg Curls:
4 sets x 10 reps x 125

I decided to change thing up today. For a while now Sundays have been deadlifts. I thought I would squat today and start hitting deads every two weeks, like I used to do.

Squat workout was good reading.

Thanks, it felt pretty good.

A lawyer in your age group and I were talking at a 40 hr seminar last week. 10 years a New Orleans cop prior law school. He has a family law practice and he agreed early morning workouts maintain sanity. I think cops and family law go together. Those guys don’t practice criminal law except for clients who are victims of crime, i.e. DUIs. Odd that former DAs don’t have qualms about practicing criminal law.

Zerchers after squats are rough.

I have a couple of friends you are former prosecutors and now work criminal defense. As you know prosecution does not pay well. My daughter wants to do family law. I assume it pays well, but I tell her that her friend’s dad makes a bunch of money in personal injury. Plus he never does to court.

Having practiced about a thousand years–and still loving it–I would tell a son truly great war stories, but not a daughter. It’s a guy thing for me. I’ve noticed over the years that women lawyers actively practicing tend to get scary if they’re successful. However that has never stopped me thinking about a certain woman attorney…the one that got away.

I would fully support a daughter’s desire to go to law school but I would say nothing to influence her decision. (I’m probably infectious though.) I would tell her there is a tradeoff for women in this business much moreso that for men, and that she needs remain open minded if she goes to law school. There’s a lot she can do with a law degree and passing the bar exam.

Do share this much with your daughter: the courthouse I frequent has a metal detector for the family law courtrooms and none for the criminal ones. Read between the lines.

Thanks. I got it. Luckily she is super smart and posted really high SAT scores.
