Old Guy Strength

Yep. Prepare for funny story regarding spotters.

10/4/17

Bench:
135 x 10, 185 x 5, 225 x 3, 245 x 1, 335 x 3, 355 x 2, 385 x 1, 320 x 5

Bench Against Band:
3 sets x 5 reps x 225

Crossover (mid-chest):
4 sets x 10 reps x 42.5

Svend Press:
4 sets x 50 reps x 3 plates (10s)

Treadmill:
15 minutes / 184 calories

That felt great. No issues at all.

Now the funny story. The new big guy as there again this morning. As stated in an earlier post he is about 15 years younger than me, and a little thicker. I could see he was watching me. When the other bench opened up, in he moved. He quickly started throwing plates on. We were the young bull and the old bull going at it. I had my 385 on and he had 365. I was watching out of the corner of my eye. He never asked anyone for a spot and struggled with the first rep. Instead of being done, he went for number two. At about one quarter of the way up the bar came crashing down. He made a strange sound and my buddy and I came running over. We were able to deadlift the bar off his chest.

After we saved his life, I gave him a pat on the chest and said, “Nice try buddy.” He was either hurt of embarrassed or both. He picked up his stuff and went home. My friend and I talked about how that is the difference between him and us. We always take a spot when it gets real heavy. We are not willing to kill ourselves over ego.

Ha Ha Ha. Great.

Job start yet?

Strong lifting as always.

Haha, love the story about the other big dude, it’s good you have now shown you are the older and wiser one, who can still outlift him!!!

Here’s a thought. I did my best lifting and always got stronger when I worked out with a younger workout partner. Might consider asking him to work out with you, if he comes back to gym.

“After we saved his life”…to funny.

I did bench w/ chains for the first time the other day: 135+ 70 or so lbs. I had a spot, mainly because I didn’t know what would happen ::slight_smile:

We all know this is very typical indeed; the ‘ego’ type lifting.

PS: not everyone should be saved; we got plenty :smirk_cat:

Monday

Thanks NHLTR. That’s about what I thought. I may give it a run.

biker, I have thought about it. I’ll be starting 0500 workouts during he week, so I doubt I will see him at this point.

Keep an open mind.

I will. I did for a year, while I was in the detective division. It was not too bad.

11/7/17

Kroc Rows:
4 sets x 10 reps x 150

DB Front Raises:
4 sets x 10 reps x 60

DB Side Raises:
4 sets x 10 reps x 45

Reverse Flies:
4 sets x 10 reps x 35

That’s it. 5:00 AM. I did not do too much for the first time out. I am, of course, worried about getting home to shower and off to work. Yesterday I got there too early (30 minutes). Once I get zeroed in on how long it takes to get downtown, it’ll be better. For some sad new, I just learned one of my new employees killed himself last night. We’ll see what today brings. Prayers for his family.

First thank you all the T-Nation vets. I know it’s a day early, Veterans Day is observed today for many people at work. With the new job, this is the first time I have had a paid holiday off in 22 years.

I was back with my 7:15 AM buddies. Everything moved fast. This was Week 8 of 8. I’ll continue with the same workout, but drop the weight and start over next week.

New big guy update: He was there today. He came up to me and shook my hand. He called me sir and thanked me for saving him last week. It turns out he tore his left pec. He rolled up his sleeve. His upper bicep and shoulder were really black and purple. He said he did the other one last year. I think the experience may have humbled him, and now we can become friends.

Good writeup. I hoped he’d thank you; reads like he’s probably a good guy. Remember, young, above average strong guys are great workout partners for guys over 40. And he’ll benefit a whole lot from your lifting experience. Your life experience too. My best lifts were with a guy 20 years younger, and we remain good friends.

Get him to come in when you do once he heals enough.

11/ 11/ 17

Bench:
135 x 10, 185 x 5, 225 x 3, 245 x 1, 340 x 3, 375 x 1, 405 x 2 (needed boost on second rep), 410 x 1

5 sets x 5 reps x 225

Do you have a gym buddy, who pushes you and makes you do things your are not sure about? Mine is Robbie. I had something else planned today, but I turned it all over to Robbie instead. I just did what he said to do. I hit a raw PR on 410, which I got clean.
