Old Guy Strength

I don’t understand people loading up on water and TP. Stupid…

Following training I had to leave to go pick up my daughter from college. Washington State has gone all online. She and her friends will probably be going back in a few weeks anyway. The dorms and chow halls will remain open.

My fulltime job will probably require me to work from home in the next few weeks. My part time job at the university is also going online. I am not sure how to teach that way, so it will be an experience.

At least there were not too many people the people there today. I am making plans for workouts if it get sent home from work and the gym closes. I have some nice equipment here, I never use. I just don’t have all the weights I normally use. I guess I’ll have to get inventive if it comes to that.

I’m in the same boat as well, plus the class I’m prof for is more of an experiential-type course. Luckily I have two weeks to figure out some of the parameters, but the capstone of the course was supposed to have students presenting at local conference type gatherings scattered around the state. Not happening.

Maybe get a sandbag–minimally 150 lb capacity–and fill gradually. 50 something guy on Rogue fitness website demonstrates uses.

I got stuff around here. I’ll just have to use the imagination if it comes to that.

I just finished moving things around, and the home gym is good to go. It goes down tomorrow. Washington State has closed all bars, restaurants, and rec centers for at least two weeks.

We all need to be in good shape to do battle at Costco.

Today was the first day in the garage. I don’t have all the dumbbells the gym has, so I have to make due. It really was not too bad.

Since I no longer have my gym bros, I had time to think. I wonder if after a while we will just know the virus as bad, and move on with our lives. It seems many more people are recovering than die. Will the shock of the whole thing wear off and life return to normal? A cure is 12 to 18 months away. How long do we cancel schools, events and just normal life? Just wondering…

Day 2 in the garage. The pounds were a little light as I get used to equipment I have rarely used in the past 20 years.

Denver has closed everything, mentioned above, for 8 weeks. My 24hour fitness is “until further notice”. I have a playground 2 blocks away, and some ‘sand tubes’ and large bags of potting soil in my shed. No other toys at my house; it’s just sad.

As for the rest, it’s hard to know what to think. With the closures, Denvers (everyones) unemployment rate is at 20, 25…30+%?, so to speak?? Possible stimulus/help aside, all the effects, cascading down, are just horrible.

Front and center of horrible now includes getting the virus if one has an underlying condition, like a near relative of mine who’s 35 w/5 month old and scads of medical problems.

Again, not what I am used to. I miss my Saturday crew. We’ve been training together for probably 15 years.

I kept things on the light side again. I forgot how tall my bench is. I placed 2 x 4s on the floor to place my feet on. My son trained at the same time and worked on squats, so that part was nice. I also found a log chain in my garage, which I think I will start to throw in.

Stay safe out there, man.

Did you used to log?
It’s hard work with a saw and a skidder. Also dangerous.

That’s a good workout.

This week Youtube trainers who can bench 315 started posting body weight and band workouts. Some interesting band adaptations; one guy does rollouts with a skateboard.

No. My uncle was for 40 years. He’s 74 and still a rock. If I recall I got the chain from my dad. He was a farmer and gave it to me for some reason I forgot about.

Deadlift:
135 x 10, 185 x 5, 225 x 3, 275 x 1, 305 x 2, 355 x 3, 325 x 5, 305 x 5
With the Log Chain:
225 x 10

Farmer’s Carry (35 in each hand / chain placed over my shoulders):
1 set x 100 yards (about)

Probably my first really good at home workout. I had Kenny Rogers turned up and a lot of energy. I tried one set with the chain the bar. I think I will continue doing stuff with it. I had the idea of the chain on my shoulder for farmer’s walk. It really made it much harder. My driveway is about 50 yards long, so I went down and back one time.

It’s hard work. Dangerous as well. No need to lift when felling trees, limbing, pulling choker chains climbing in and out of a skidder or farm tractor if it’s being used to log.
Hard laboring leaves a type of physical fitness and strength that training just can’t replicate.
Enjoy the chain, and you training.
