Old Farts and Making Progress

This question is for guys that have been at it awhile. At your advanced old age an state of disrepair are you able to make any progress?

Reading over on some of the other forums, guys talk about new pr’s and the quest of bigger, stronger. Are any of you guys making gains, any new pr’s, or is a win just maintaining? If you’re fairly new, gains are to be expected at any age. But the guys you have been grinding away and are over 40, what say you?

Yes when I am training toward a goal I do progress. Not as rapidly as the younger guys but I do progress. Example, when I was powerlifting and training properly I would hit PR’s weekly. However since I have been playing football and stopped power lifting I expect that the numbers will be way down when I get back to them, lol.

My best meet numbers were

460 Bench
500 DL
500 SQ

Not record breakers for sure but they are my numbers, lol

My numbers are still going up… At least, I think they are.

It’s hard to remember.

I’m old.

Just remember this, Louie Simmons squatted over 900# in his mid-50’s. Albert Beckles (http://www.bodybuilders.com/albert.htm) was competing in OPEN bodybuilding divisions and winning competitions into his 60’s.

You can continue to get bigger and stronger for a long time.

GS-

I’m not in the “Over 40” camp yet, although I’m on the nasty end of my 30’s.

I look to this forum in particular for inspiration, experience, and perspective as there are a lot of dudes, big dudes, moving weight around that I could only hope to move in the coming years-- and they’re progressing.

Of course I started in an advanced state of disrepair, but I’ve been making steady progress. Expect to continue this morning.

Plateaus are caused by: lack of omega3, heavy metal, thyroid dysfunction, lack of minerals and nutrients, poor digestion, lack of training age is not really a factor if these things are in order.

Well, now, this one I have to disagree with— My MP3 player is full of Pantera, Judas Priest, Static-X, and Metaliica. It really gets me going and I’ve made a number of PR’s with it blasting through my earphones…

Plateaus are caused by poor rganization of training or inadequate recovery methods or having your head wrong (“I’m too old to make progress in this anymore…”).

“If you think you can or you think you can’t, you’re right.” - Unknown annoying motivational prick.

Got to be “lack of heavy metal” …

Though too much selenium really is bad for you. They need to quit putting it into vitamins.

I believe I’m still making progress. The last few weeks have been kind of a mess, but after this vacation I’m taking the family on, I’ve got a program I hope will help me into some new PRs for an upcoming meet

True that.

When I was 35, I compared my progress with others. I wanted to be better than they were. Now, at 54, I just compete with myself. As long as I do a little better than yesterday, I’m good with that. Besides, there are no other women my age in the weight room.

Progress over when? No, I’m not making progress over my best lifts ever (even discounting probable inflation of how good I once was.) I’m steadily progressing back towards them but doubt I’ll ever equal them again.

Definitely making progress from when I started lifting seriously again. Will say even at my “advanced old age an state of disrepair” I’m still growing. Attribute this directly to zydecko and not heavy metal, however.

Laissez les bon temps rouler!!

Et finissez jamais jolie dame!!

I was an occasional lifter until my mid 30’s. I then put the beer down and I got hooked on training. I wonder what I could of done if I had gotten serious younger. My 2 boys (24,and 19) are now lifting. I’ve told them to build their base now and have it the rest of your life.

I still make gains at 51, but there are more setbacks also. (stupid back, stupid shoulders) I enjoy it more and appreciate it more. Nothing makes my day like having a 24 yr old come up to me and ask “How do I get to look like you?” I smile and reply “just get old boy.”

That is a keeper!

Zat right?

I’m in the same boat as SteelyD…almost 40 and making gains.

I’m stronger than ever in all major lifts but mostly cause of poor and inconsistent training in my 20s.

Directly yes. Means… and never end, pretty lady.
