In the last 8 months I have:
Lost about 10 pounds
Added about 40 to my squat and DL
Tied my lifetime (gym) PR in the DL (430) at a body weight of 170.
Pretty much convinced myself to try powerlifting again - I did only one meet, 28 years ago.
So, one can do it at a later age - I am 59. I find that you must be hitting on all cylinders - careful program design, good nutrition, rest, warm-up, flexibility, etc

I was an occasional lifter until my mid 30’s. I then put the beer down and I got hooked on training. I wonder what I could of done if I had gotten serious younger. My 2 boys (24,and 19) are now lifting. I’ve told them to build their base now and have it the rest of your life.
I still make gains at 51, but there are more setbacks also. (stupid back, stupid shoulders) I enjoy it more and appreciate it more. Nothing makes my day like having a 24 yr old come up to me and ask “How do I get to look like you?” I smile and reply “just get old boy.”[/quote]
That’s GOLD !!!
I’m with ya on the stupid back and stupid shoulders part
too. I also agree in that I enjoy it a lot more than I did
in my 20’s. I’ve also learned to pace myself better and am better able to guage how much recovery I need given workout intensity, job stresses, and family stresses.
Diet requires almost perfect precision and discipline
now, and that, is a real bitch !!
But, to answer the OP, I make plenty of gains at 43YO
and hope to continue for a long time to come.
I didnt even START lifting until 42 (now 44). making progress(p’lifter), but not nearly as fast as what most posters in the other forums claim . I’d hate to think I train like a pussy , but I sure as hell dont want to cause more harm than good . so I just take what I can get…still in better shape than a few years back .
It just gets harder after you hit 60! Well over that now. Been lifting for 50 years,it becomes a habit. The real problem is nutrition sticking to healthy food (which has become very expensive recently for us pensioners). New lifters over 60 i.e. those who never exercised in their lives will make progress for their age but we who have trained all our lives just maintain and definitely the strenght takes a dive. I lift half what I did 30 years ago. Now I only have a 4 pack! Ha ha.
