Old and Slow

For only having been at it for 90 days I’d say they are both doing well. I would advise them to:

  1. go to the body more, especially if someone likes to lean away from their punches (like you seem to do fairly often) or has a reach advantage on them. Not only will this lead to more of their punches landing, but will also force their opponent to defend a larger target area than just their head

  2. use more of an educated jab rather than just throwing it out and hoping it lands. They need to study their opponent’s defensive habits and adjust their method of attack accordingly rather than just throwing out combinations. Also mix up their targets with their jab.

  3. use more broken rythym (fakes, feints, changes in speed/line of attack/essence and timing) to keep their opponent off balance defensively

  4. use angles, turning, and off balances once inside against a bigger opponent to keep them physically off balance

  5. make sure they maintain a solid defensive position when they attack (other hand or in front of the chin, chin down, shoulder(s) close to the chin, solid base with their feet) in case their opponent returns fire rather than pulling their head out of the defensive pocket and leaning back and lifting their chin like they tend to do

  6. it’s ok to throw non committed punches to probe your opponent’s defensive tendencies, draw counters so you can counter their counter, or lull your opponent into a false sense of distance or confidence but when it’s time to throw for real you’ve got to commit. I know this can be difficult when you know you could get hit back, but if you don’t you won’t ever land anything substantial and won’t earn your opponent’s respect for your offense.

Thank You Sento, I will have them read your post. It is good for them to hear it from others.
