I’m traveling to Oklahoma City tomorrow for work and will be staying downtown near the convention center. I’ll have a car, but I’d prefer not to drive too far. Any good gyms in the area where I can get a max effort squat session in?
10 years ago I lifted at a place called “The Weight Room” It is located at 3901 N Tulsa, just south of the 39th St Expressway (943-7600). It is a little ways from down town but easy enought to get to take I-40 west bound from down town, to I-44 north bound (towards Tulsa), get off on NW 39th St Expressway and go west about a half mile or so and it will be on your left (south).
The only other place I know of is on the SE side of town at SE 104th St and Sunny Lane, called “Body Tec”. They had a Monolift the last time I lifted there (3 years ago) they had several powerlifters working out there.
There was a Gold’s Gym on the NW Expressway, west of Council Rd, but that would be as far away from down town as Body Tec. I don’t know if it is still there.
And then there is the explosion of Anytime Fitness locations that seem to be everywhere…
Hopes this helps.
Fred
Body Tec still has their monolift.
Southern Athletic isn’t too far off. They have a power cage that you can use for your ME squat. PM if you go to Southern Athletic and I can join you to spot you and get some squattin’ in.
Tanique Gym and Tanning Salon
2625 W Britton Rd
Oklahoma City, OK 73120
(405) 755-6940
This is hands down where you want to go. And it’s only $5 a day.
By far the best gym I’ve been too in OKC. Lots of bodybuilders, but very powerlifter friendly. Very friendly gym period.
It’s not far from downtown. I live downtown, near the convention center. Takes about 15-20 minutes to get there (excluding rush hour).
Take West I-40, then North on Hefner Parkway (highway 74), then 10 minutes later exit on Britton road. Head East on Britton, cross May Ave. and you should see Tanique on you left.
Or, take 235 North, exit on Britton, head West for a few miles, Tanique should be on your right.
During rushhour, 235 (locals call it “broadway extension”) is busier than Hefner Parkway.
Enjoy.
I recommend Tanique as well.
If you can’t make it there, Universal Fitness in southwest OKC. It’s about 25 minutes from downtown, so I don’t know if that’s too far or not.
From downtown, take I-40 West to I-44 West, exit on Western Avenue, make a right (heading south), and you’ll see it on your left hand side about 3 miles down (Location is SW 117th and Western). It’s next door to Brink Junior High School, and across the street from Sonic Drive-In and Bruam’s Ice Cream and Dairy Store.

No, the Gold’s shut down a couple of years ago. There is an All-American fitness close to where it used to be on NW Expressway. The closest one is on Broadway Extension close to the Bob Howard dealership. OP, it is kinda far from downtown, so you might wanna skip that one.
FYI, there is a YMCA on NW 4th Street, about 3 blocks from the convention center. Don’t waste your time there. They don’t even have a squat rack, only Smith machines.
BTW, this thread is great; I’ve learned about several new gyms.
Thanks for all the input gents. I’ll sort out where I’m going when I land this afternoon.
Well, I got pressed for time and it was either the YMCA (walking distance to my hotel) or no workout. No squat rack, but I got a pretty good session in all things considered. Thanks for all the input on gym locations. I’ll make sure to hit one of them up the next time in OKC and hopefully have some more time.
