Don’t get me wrong, I can appreciate a huge mass freak just as I enjoy looking at a midget in the circus, a 8 foot tall man, Siamese Twins or any oddity of nature. It’s entertaining, I get it.

Generally speaking the only people who like fat bulky bodies are other fat bulky bodied people. To each his own…not fair to criticize one for another. But deep down inside the majority of people who lift secretly want to impress other people. Smooth 18" arms with love handles will NEVER trump lean 16" arms and a six-pack. Fat dudes will hate that I said it, but to 99.9% of the population they will agree. And keep in mind there is also .1% of the population who thinks the 350lb booty mama is hotter than a ripped fitness model. To each their own but I can say this based on experience, leaner physiques are more appealing to the overwhelming masses…take it from a guy who has been there and done that.

I am a moderator and I can delete that post, however, the moment I start to do that, we will also have to deal with the drama by trolls that the board is CENSORING them. That is why I have been giving warnings so far.

If all of you had let it end with the warning, we wouldn’t be having this discussion right now.

Prof X congrats on your promotion.

OK and to not get flamed on I will contribute with a pic. As a teenager the Barbarian Brothers were my biggest inspiration, well ahead of the competitive bb’s at the time such as Sammer Bannout, Gaspari or Bob Paris. My buddy and I drove 2 hours to Golds Gym Venice and paid a guest fee to train there. And as luck would have it the Barbarians were training that day. They were beasts. They seemed to live the image too…saw one of them pick big ole booger out of his nose and wipe it under the bench. Anyway those guys always seemed to be “off-season” but even so they were reasonably lean. This is a classic pic of them, they are hard to come by.
Most of the off season bodybuilders in this thread are less than 15% body fat with some hovering between 15 and 20% body fat even at their heaviest. That means your post isn’t making much sense as no one here has a goal of becoming obese and most of these guys look ridiculous when dieted down. I even just commented on the previous page about one bodybuilder who at 315lbs STILL HAS ABS SHOWING…so what are you talking about?

Even if I get up to 20% body fat, that is not my GOAL. That is a means to an end especially since most of these guys would not be anywhere near this size if they never got heavier in the off season to gain that muscle mass.

This is me:

X, that hat needs to go.

I feel honored to be in the “I wear a red hat while lifting” club. Now I gotta work on being black and 270+ lbs… I’ll settle for “not ghostly pale” and 270+ though.

We share similar tastes when it comes to head-wear, it seems. Never worn mine while training though… Got a bandanna for that… Keeps the sweat out of my eyes better.

How much do you weigh in that picture? You don’t look any smaller (muscle-wise) than you were at ~300 from what I recall, so I’m guessing the diet is going well/first stage went well?

I’ve been a long time lurker, and I suppose now as as good a time as any to make a first post. That picture is in my gym in South Carolina. I’ve met Cedric and seen him in action. The dude is nothing short of unbelievable. No BS attitude and a superb work ethic.

From this quote it seems that you believe the sole reason people train is to impress others. I hope thats not the case, but from what you wrote here it does seem that way.

Also, fatasses? Even at around 20% bf (although definently not ideal), I don’t think someone carrying a good amount of muscle mass would be perceived as a “fatass” anyway.

I don’t want to speak for others, but I can’t be the only one that trains for myself first and foremost. As corny as it may sound, theres something spiritual to working hard, working smart, and sacrificing in order to overcome bodily limitaions

Holy moly…“out of touch and out of place!” I think I just got a cyber beat down! My only point was that many of the muscleheads I have encountered during the past 25 years were perpetually “bulking” in the “off-season” which was essentially year round since most never stepped on a stage. To the overwhelming majority of the population (99.9%) they looked like fat asses. All that work and the same people they were trying to impress looked at them as fat asses. To the .1% they looked large but that fringe group was typically guys who looked just like them, fat boys who did not compete. But in my pics of the Barbarians you can see they were not fat and they did not compete either (like the majority of the readers on this website). They carried a much lower body fat % and unless you are gunning for the Mr. Olympia title its probably better off to keep the body fat% lower rather than higher. But thanks for your input and once again congrats on your “promotion” to moderator of the forum. With 30,000+ posts you were long overdue for the recognition.
Has it occured to you that people lift for reasons other than impressing strangers?

My only point was that many of the muscleheads I have encountered during the past 25 years were perpetually “bulking” in the “off-season” which was essentially year round since most never stepped on a stage. To the overwhelming majority of the population (99.9%)
You must know an awful lot of people. Over 5 billion? Popular guy, huh?
they looked like fat asses
People who have no frame of reference. People who don’t know what they’re looking at. The average untrained or not seriously-training person I know personally sees a hint of bicep definition and a hint of abs and thinks “muscle”.
. All that work and the same people they were trying to impress
Uh… Looking socially acceptable/not too narrow/small may have been the goal that got me started originally, but by now I don’t give a damn about that anymore… If impressing a few people who don’t know what the hell they’re seeing is your motivation, then you can pretty much stop training seriously after a year or two at most and go over to maintenance work… Furthermore… No matter whether you’re a soft 280 or a ripped 160, regular people are, from my experience, likely to explain your physique away by accusing you of steroid use (perhaps not openly) and thinking about how bad training must be for your bones/tendons/health/whatever.
If you outclass someone in some way, they usually will try to pull you down somehow. So why does it matter if some idiot considers a larger person “fat”? If the larger guy were ripped, it would be “he uses steroids!” or “he eats creatine!!!” or whatever.

As far as females go… Never had a problem. And I’m not the only one here, in fact, just ask the black guys like X and Lewhitehurst, them pimps

Maybe it’s not your intention, but you come across a little like the regular guy tearing others down to make himself feel better… No knock on you, it’s hard to convey such things over the net.
still looked at them as fat asses. To the .1% they looked large but that fringe group was typically guys who looked just like them, fat boys who did not compete. But in my pics of the Barbarians you can see they were not fat and they did not compete either (like the majority of the readers on this website) . They carried a much lower body fat %
Arnold and most of his time all went through phases were they were rather smooth… And gained the fastest… Same as most of today’s guys, save for those gifted enough to get by staying lean.
and unless you are gunning for the Mr. Olympia title its probably better off to keep the body fat% lower rather than higher.
What do you mean by lower? Single digit or what? If your goal is to look constantly lean, fine… Not all of us think the same way you do, and this thread was originally made in response to all the “lean bulk” threads and the general leanness-craze we had on here a while back… Because some of us simply have different/far more extreme goals and can actually appreciate the way as much as the destination.
I’m not sure why you decided to chime in…
But thanks for your input and once again congrats on your “promotion” to moderator of the forum. With 30,000+ posts you were long overdue for the recognition.
http://www.originalalamo.com/images/barbarians.gif ← Peter and Paul, the Barbarian Brothers. Don’t look much leaner than Professor X, or many of the guys posted here (of course we’ve had guys carrying more fat posted in here as well… So?), so what exactly is the issue?

I have either worked in gyms or trained in gyms for 25 years. I am not overly impressive to look at. I am not an expert on slow vs fast twitch hypertrophy. I do know one thing and that is through experience and maturation MOST guys come to realize that unless you are a competitive bodybuilder, it is better to remain on the lean side most of the time rather than trying to “bulk” in the “off-season.” The reason is most of the readers here will never have an “on-season” as most will never step on a stage. The dudes in SOME of these pics are carrying a LOT of fat. And that obviously works for a professional bodybuilder who has the work ethic/time/finances/genetics/supplements to shed that fat. But I doubt many of those guys read this website. Most of the guys who do read this website have jobs, families etc. My initial post was only in response to the guys who were taking pot shots at the lean guys or the importance of having abs etc. Here is a fact that most of you will at one point in your life agree with. When you are 40+ years old you will value a six pack of abs far more than love handles and 18" arms.

As for Professor X, the guy seems pretty bright and has a lot to offer but his message board persona is very inflammatory and confrontational. He is the prototypical message board bully. TMUSCLE is a great website and I am surprised that those who run this website would allow him to have admin privleges. As a moderator it is important to stimulate conversation and not stifle it. It is important to insure people do not cross the line with ethnic, racial, religious, sexual posts…that is the mods job. But as a mod you should embrace different opinions not rage against them. And to Prof. X I have a message…I know you love giving advice, well sometimes its just as important to take advice. When you come off as condensending it only makes YOU look bad. I don’t know you at all but I recently decided to read some of your 30k plus posts and it seems they have a common theme, many are argumentative and/or condensending. Take a page out of Christian T’s page, he is always professional and is a great representative of this website. OK kid, don’t sweat it, you have a lot to offer…just stay positive or you will chase people away rather than draw them in.

OK I am done now…back on topic…getting HUGE :-)
And its shit like this i wish i was a moderator. Dick. Do u think people care that they dont compete. The majority of people on here have a sole purpose i being the biggest they can possibly be. If there comes a point where they believe that they will be successful on stage or just wanna compete. They do so. What they do is determined by their own believes and not by some pre-determined “way of the bodybuilder”.

And in reference to PX – most knowledgeable, no-nonsense blokes on this site (besides C_C of course ;)) and if you ask the right questions (right, being an informed, ive actually thought about this before typing, sorts question) then the information that comes out of his mouth tends to be spot on. X is probably the biggest natty i have ever seen and why the hell wouldnt u take advice from a guy thats got himself to 300+ reasonably lean.

Hi. Thanks for offering your advice. I appreciate it. However, I think you should look at the title and OP of the thread. It is not the “Give advice to youngins” thread. It is not the “Importance of six pack abs for the noncompetive bodybuilder” thread not is it the “let’s discuss abs vs bulk” thread. It is a thread for posting pictures and appreciating the off season physiques of bodybuilders. Feel free to start your own thread about whatever you choose, just keep on topic here. As of now, you’re way off of it.

You should get one like Gene Rychlak’s.

Leo Ingram

Nasser with his friend Guillermo

Zoltan Voros

Scott Milne, pictured here alone and without any hot girls because he’s so fat in the offseason and why doesn’t he just not bother bulking? It’s not like he’s impressing all the countless average sedentary people who he clearly lifts weights specifically to impress.
