I apologise beforehand if this is the wrong section or if it’s not allowed.
I’m looking for a trainer in the LA/OC area, preferably around fullerton/anaheim/cerritos/downey but am willing to travel up to 25 miles from 92833 or 90201.
I’m trying to pursue the following goals:
-
Get my body fat percentage down (Currently 6’, 315~ lbs., and 34.6% body fat but I doubt the accuracy of that, it was measured with a unit that you hold with 2 hands above your chest arms out that is shaped like a boomerang.)
-
Increase my overall strength
I am a criminal justice major and plan to strart the recruitment process tp become a police officer on my 20th birthday which is July 31, roughly 5 months from now. In that time my number one priority is dropping my body fat percentage fast.
I joined an LA Fitness gym back in September of '05 and have seen noticeable strength improvements but I feel that an expert trainer will be able to properly guide me to whatever my potential is and help me lose weight. I considered at first hiring an LA Fitness trainer, but to be honest I get the feeling none of these guys know what the hell they are doing.
I would prefer a trainer with a name that is known around due to my time constraints.
I’m a college student working part time and I’m not loaded with cash but I can manage up to $400 a month because this is a big priority for me to attain my goals.
If this is not enough then I’m fine with skeleton training so to speak, like meeting once a week and explaing various exercises I need to do and show me how to do them properly and do them individually sometime that week. I’m not a pro at any of this but I do pick up fast and I am dedicated. I’m willing to relocate to another gym if need be as long as the cost is not more than $60 a month.
If you are interested in helping me train or know someone who would please contact me in this thread or by email @ daltron [at] gmail [dot] com.
Daltron,
Sorry I don’t know of a trainer in the area. However you may want to look at the pre-academy training/preps that are offer in conjunction with the local academies. Santa Ana College has one (associated with OC Sheriff’s Academy) and Fullerton College has one as well that’s tied to their academy. They are essentailly community college PE courses that are specifically geared to get you ready for academy PT.
In the academy the physical portion is going to be heavy into running both ‘long runs’ and shorter speed work and body weight exercises (push-ups, pull-ups and sit-ups). Since your goal is to successfully quailify on the PAT’s and survive an academy make sure your trainer keyed into that.
An option might be to check out LA Boxing on Harbor Blvd in Fullerton. Their classes are 1 hour of wrap your hands and beat on a bag boxing or kickboxing. You’ll be dripping wet when you walk out. The technical training is above tae-bo/cardio kick classes but not at the level of straight fight gym. You may even pick-up something useful that can be applied in DT or at least a fighting mind set.
Couple that with a regular running routing such as a beginner-to-5K program (found on running websites) and a regular schedule of body weight exercises and you’ll be well on your way. Take a look at the ‘pre-Quantico Kit’ on the FBI website and the LAPD’s pre-academy prep for some ideas.
For some specific help with running, I believe Snail’s Pace in Brea offers race prep and/or clinics/clubs that could help.
Not the perfect answer here, but if your membership allows access to other LA Fitness gyms, then travel around and try to find a trainer there that’s more what you’re looking for.
I belong to a chain “gym.” There are trainers at each and they have a variety of skills and abilities. There are many, many trainers who I would never use, but there are one or two that know what they’re doing.
The benefit here is that you will be able to spend your money on a lot more sessions. If motivation is your issue, than that might be a benefit. Maybe not.
You can always call the different centers and ask to speak with the head trainer, tell him/her your goals and see if they feel that someone on staff meets those requirements. You can then decide if you want to meet with them for a trial session.
It might be worth a shot, even if it’s just until you find the trainer of your dreams.
