Numb Thumb (Oly Lifting)

When I do clean pulls, my left hand thumb goes numb from the first knuckle down but only half of it. I don’t use wraps because I feel like it’s going to yank my hands off. I haven’t tried taping yet, but it is only one side.

The numbness lasts 24-48 hrs.

Thoughts?

During those times when my thumbs are sore or the skin has been torn, some thumb wraps like thin gauze strips make a big difference.

I like to use straps on clean and snatch pulls so I don’t have to think about the grip, only the pulls.

Not sure why the numbness lasts so long. Even if I do some SLD with a hook grip and no straps, the numbness only last a few seconds for me. How long have you been using the hook grip?

I don’t think that soreness is the issue. Of course I guess it could be sore but I wouldn’t know because I can’t feel it.

I’ve been using a hook grip for probably a year now, but just recently started going “heavier” on clean pulls.

How much of your thumb do you grab? You might be putting pressure on a nerve or something if you’re grabbing high above the joint. That’s the only thing I can think of.

hook grip screwed me up exactly like that. solution? i’m a powerlifter so hook grip isn’t important. good luck- I don’t have any other advice than to ditch it!

Is the hook grip meant to be used in conjuction with straps? Cause I tried it yesterday without and it felt awkward.

no - oly lifters can’t use straps in comp, so it is not intended for it. it is mainly intended for when people snatch (and thus have their hands out really far).
