Nsaids + Bodybuilding = Bad?

was curious if anyone had the answer to squash this rumor?

i’ve read in a few articles and have also heard rumors that using nsaids while training inhibits muscle growth.

is this true?

i was shot in the leg jan '06 and i need nsaids to help with cardio. just my job no way around it. i’d be pretty upset to find out that all that hard work i put in the gym is going to waste.

appreciate the help

I’ve never heard of this rumor. I might research it when I have time but the side effects of NSAIDs include the non-selective irreversible inhibition of COX-I and COX-II, if that has anything to do with it.

If it turns out to be true, you don’t NEED NSAIDs, get a prescription anti-inflammatory that isn’t in the NSAID class and be done with the wonder. There are many out there.

As far as I know nsaids do suppress muscle growth

Yep. There’s plenty of research to support this. Mega-dosing antioxidants can have similar effects.

good enough for me…thank you.

Is it anticipated that your leg will ever heal completely and there will come a time when you don’t need them anymore?

Hey Schwarz,

All the papers I’ve seen on this conclude that nsaids suppress “post exercise protein synthesis” but unfortunately none that I’ve seen say to what extent. Do you have any info on this?

Anyway, if the level of suppression is fairly low, and the nsaids allow you to get into the gym, then I guess stick with it, or see if you can switch to a different a/i.

the path the round took was too jagged, and the army predicted it wouldn’t cause any issues. turns out it effected my IT Band and my patela is displaced due to all the muscles pulling different directions.

i’ve been having it reviewed and it looks like im having it removed.

i’ve been mainly using low impact machines for cardio, it’s been helping.
