Novaeer's Training Log: On the Comeback Trail

The SSB is my nemesis too. We use 2 ‘special’ bars at my place; my cambered bar squat is identical to the straight bar, but the SSB just kicks my ass (I’ve Americanized for you) all over the place. I try to use it fairly regularly, and sometimes use it for GMs. Which is rather humbling.

I hate using the SSB for GMs. It feels like it is going to cut my damn head off so I just stick with the straight bar variety GM.

H?TS Week 1 Day 1
August 22nd

SSB Squats 225x3;255x3;275x3;295x3;185x10
SSB Arch-back GMs 155x3x8
DB rows 120x22,20;16,15
Pulldowns 3x15
KB swings 3x15
Abs

Summary: This might not look like much, but I was dying by the end of today’s session. Limited carb intake and the high rep DB rows just completely wiped me out, lol. Pretty decent numbers on the SSB squats considering that bar owns me. The GMs with the safety squat bar weren’t as bad as they usually are and didn’t feel like I was going to be decapitated for a change.

Crap, that’s a lot of DB rows. That would have sent me home crying for momma.

SSB Squats seem like a real bitch good work, x2 on what Jack said that is a shit ton of rows!

Who was your green training partner? He didnt seem to be to supportive, his stare was very judgemental.

Yeah, the SSB tosses your upper body forward and since that is a tendency/weakness of mine, that bar just amplifies it. It was only two sets of rows, but it felt like 20 after I was done.

Ah, you noticed my dinosaur friend there in the background. He is very stoic, but take one look at him during a training session and you know you’re just not working hard enough in his eyes.

HTS Week 1 Day 2
August 25th

Bench press w/ dbl minis w/u to 275x3;225x8
CG 3-board press 315x3x5
Face pulls 3x15
ITYs 3x10

…A short time later
Bench press w/ 2 hanging 25s 3x8
Pushdowns 5x20

Summary: Trained at Scott’s (meat’s) gym today. I worked up to 275 for a moderately difficult triple on the bench against bands. The bands were the brand new EFS onyx ones and seemed to have more tension than the regular ones. I was only supposed to use 275 for the 3-board presses, but I went ahead and bumped it up to 315. All the reps were still pretty easy. Finished up with a couple of assistance moves and hit a couple of exercises at home that I forgot to do. The hanging bench was hard as hell and took a lot of effort to keep stable.

Did you find the gym to be well equipped for ITYs? Good work in here!

Who the fuck are you and why are you in my training log??? LOLOLOL. It is very well equipped. One of these days I’ll be qualified enough to call myself a powerlifter.

Haha, on a semi-serious note, how do you tell Adam that you put 40 extra pounds on the bar!?

Benching with suspended plates is always fun. How did you suspend them? We sometimes use bands and that is… Interesting.

I lol’d at you doing SSB GMs after the previous comments about decapitation.

I know it was a well-deserved slap on the back of the head. As for the hanging 25s bench, I use light bands to suspend them from the bar sleeve. Works pretty well, but the exercise itself is hard as hell.

HTS Week 1 Day 3
August 26th

Box squats +light bands 225x8x2
4" box pulls w/u to 455x3x3
Band clamshells (monster minis) 3x15
Seated band leg curls 5x20

Summary: Solid session today. Box squats had pretty good pop throughout and didn’t aggravate my hip at all. The 4" box pulls were tough as usual because that height is just brutal to start from; the reps weren’t speedy and I probably could have done a better job driving my hips through at the top.

It looks real strong.

Thanks. My piriformis syndrome symptoms have abated thanks to focusing more on foam rolling and mobility work. Hopefully that pays off in the strength building department, too.

HTS Week 2 Day 1
August 29th

Concentric SSB good mornings 225x1;255x1;275x1;285x1
DB rows 120x3x15
Pulldowns 3x15
KB swings 3x15
Kneeling ab wheel 3x10

Summary: Hardest. Lift Variation. Ever. When it started to get challenging at 225, I knew this was going to be a dogfight. It actually took a couple of tries to get the weight moving with 275, but couldn’t leave well enough alone to try 285. My entire back was trashed after this - all the way from the traps down to the lower back. Just a killer. The rows didn’t make things any easier on my back, lol. I think I’ll probably be sore for a month or two after this one.

Pulls looked real strong.
