I am doing 5/3/1 on my four main lifts with the 5x10 assistance on those lifts on a separate day (example- 5/3/1 press and 5x10 bench on Mon. and 5/3/1 Bench and 5x10 press on Thur.). Using chest as an example, I usually hit it with 5/3/1 lifts one day for strength and hit it with 2-4 assistance lifts using 5x10 for mass on another day. I also usually do a couple crossfit workouts a week as well.
I find myself pumping out a few sets of pushups randomly while watching tv or sitting around (do the same with pull-ups whenever I walk by the pull-up bar). Do you guys think this is counterproductive. Should I cut that type of thing out completely and just stick with my program? Just wondering if I am not giving myself enough recovery time.
I do push ups and pull ups almost daily (at least 6 times per week) … In fact, I tend to regress a little (size, strength) if I DONT do them that frequently
As long as you aren’t going to failure on your sets you shouldn’t have a problem … I think it’s a great way to get in more volume
I know when I was doing 5/3/1 and pushups every day, my BP progress stalled. When I cut them out I started progressing again. This was most likely due to pushing (pun intended) them too hard the day before my 5/3/1 BP day. At my age I need to be more careful with recovery. I would treat them as any conditioning exercise and use common sense.
