Anybody here live and train in NC? I’m moving down to Union County next week and am looking for a crew to train with in that area (Charlotte area). I’ve searched the Marunde Muscle forums and haven’t found anything recent.
I did a contest as a teen heavy in 2007 and loved it. I got away from strongman and serious lifting in general from 2008-12 but now I’m trying to get back into competing.
Any info is much appreciated.
The NC strongman scene is a bit underground still, but is very well flourishing. I am out of the Charlotte area (Denver, Lincoln county). This same area is where guys like LW pro Tom Mutaffis and HW pro Adam Scherr came and trained out of. Central NC atm is home to the state chairman who puts on a hell of a show (Lynn Morehouse).
Iron Physique (Denver NC) is a small, old school, but very adequate gym for strongman, as it houses alot of Adam’s old, but still working equipment. I believe there’s about 6 circus dumbbells, a 10" log, a car deadlift apparatus, an axle, frame, and some stones. I’m right around the corner from this gym. I’ve got a yoke, axle, stones, tire…basically anything your mind could think of in my garage.

I used to live in the NC area. Hated it…But I do know of a hard-core gym in the Raleigh area that costs about $120/month.
Strongmanvinny- thanks for the response. I’ll be living in Monroe which looks like an hour or so from Denver, not a bad drive on a weekend for event training once I find a contest to enter. I have farmers bars, a keg, and axle, and I’m trying to get the girlfriend to go half & half on a yoke and a stone mold in the meantime.
I see that NC Strongest Man & Woman was this February; is it typically held that month? Looked like a good contest.
Aero51- thanks for the info about Raleigh gym. I grew up in the DC area of MD but lived near Wilmington for a while and near Charlotte a bit last year. I’ve found I like NC much more than MD!
NCSM was a great contest. You can find a video of it on my youtubez. I’m not sure when it’s typically held, I believe it has been rather sporadic. There has been North Carolina’s Strongest Man, and North Carolina’s Strongest Man and Woman, each held by separate promoters (to my knowledge).
