No Gi JJ: Ankle Supports, Grappling Tights

Do any of u grappling or JJ guys wear ankle supports to help with friction? And same ? for grappling leg tights.

I am pretty lucky I have above average lower body flexibility and have been using a lot of techniques from the 10th planet jj system. Would ankle supports and grappling tights give me much of an advantage vs non wearing them when using missiong control and the rubber guard system?

Thanks?

i dont really use any of the rubber guard stuff, but any kind of clothing or knee brace will give you more friction in an area where it’s worn - the difference between grappling a dude with a tshirt vs a sweaty dude without is a big difference.

on the other hand, it works both ways, if you wear pants which give you more friction for armbars and triangles, it also gives your opponents more grip when they look to control your legs. i would say you should train in the same profile you plan on competing or fighting in.

if you are planning to do mma, then you arent going to be wearing pants in the cage, but a knee brace can make a decent amount of difference if you’re a guy who plays off his back.

that’s all the common sense shit im sure youve thought of already, but if youre looking for experience with added stuff, wrestling shoes give you a great amount of control and grip off the mat but leave you pretty susceptible to heel hooks…ive stopped wearing them in comp because there are plenty of foot hunters out there.

i almost always wear a knee brace and i feel it gives me an added grip especially off my back when im looking for an armbar or a triangle. i dont wear ankle braces and wouldnt exactly for the same reason i dont wear shoes anymore - heel hooks. hope that helps.

Yup, perfect your technique, don’t look for clothing based loopholes.

hmm…i don’t wear those things, and prolly wouldn’t for a competition, either.

i have kind of sloppy technique, and have found that if my body position isn’t right, then it’s a waste of time to try the submition. and just increasing my traction or grip doesn’t necessarily guarantee me getting the submission, either. however, i’m pretty mobile for a fat guy, so my scrambling is really important. if i make it easy for someone to get ahold of me, then that kind ruins my game…

however, if i were slower, and had really solid technique, i might feel otherwise.

like the other guys said, it’s a trade-off either way…

I agree with Slimjim to be honest.
Especially if you are competing in the US you could get some problems with wrestlers who shoot in and control you using your own friction (coming from the ankle supports/knee brace/leg tights) against you.

In Europe wrestling is not that big but when fighting wrestlers I have found that they control the legs really well and when going for leglocks or heelhooks they will get more friction by using your own clothing against you.

I’d say fight without and perfect technique, use setups or lock em down and go for the submission.

Everyone here is wrong! Since I started wearing ankle supports I’ve been able to sub every purple belt at my gym! And this week I started wearing leggings and sub’d some brownies! YEah! Boosh! Now I need to find out what to get to sub those black belts! MAYBE A BLACK GI!

No but seriously. I don’t see how ankle supports will help you, other than a possible slight grip advantage… if you currently shave your legs. Leggings. I won’t lie, I’ve thought about it. I bruise easy, and have sensitive skin (no joke I just posted about mat burn), so this I feel might help with that; but then again how will I teach my body to stop being a pussy if I wear leggings?

Just my white belt opinion.
