Nike Free's?

I have some questions I’m hoping you guys can answers. I actually have three (just bought a third) pairs.
The original 5.0’s I wear for just walking around. The 5.0 trainers I have been wearing for sprints, plyos, and olympic weightlifting. However, my feet have a tendenceny to roll out on heavy squats, and the 5.0 trainers do not give enough lateral support to prevent this. So I just bought the 7.0 trainers which have much more lateral support.

  1. Is the issue of my feet rolling out to the sides during squats a dysfunction or is it considered normal?

  2. It is very cold where I am, so until now I have been wearing the free’s with thin socks, and have removed the insole from both the regular and trainer 5.0s to compensate. From what I understand, an insole is just there to provided added support, so I figure that by removing the insole and adding a thin sock - I am not really changing anything… Is this right?
I ask because I am also considering removing the insoles of my new 7.0s…

  3. Does anyone wear the frees without insoles or socks?
4. What you described here seems like an issue with your squat. The lateral support built into the 7 was more for quick cuts/cross training rather than actually supporting it while your foot is immobile. I’d repost your squat question in one of the training threads.

  5. Do what is most comfortable for you, I know Prof. X recommends the sockless method but I just can’t do it like that and I prefer wearing thin ankle socks when wearing my 5.0 and 7.0 trainers. Not only do my feet feel like they freeze when I’m outside but then I feel like my feet are dripping sweat when I’m in the gym. I do recommend non-cotton, thin ankle socks though, I’ve tried other types of socks and it changes the fit a little if your socks are too thick.

  6. Never tried it without the insole, so I can’t help you here.

Best shoe’s I’ve ever owned. I own a pair of 5.0 trainers, as well as the 7’s. The only disturbing this is that I think they are being discontinued.

While I can still find them online, every store in my area no longer has any of the models. and I’ve been told it’s an “old” shoe now. Hopefully, they will be replaced with something better. Either that, or I better order like a dozen pair of the Nike site.
na man… i was in the nike town store yesterday and and the had all 7 styles of the 7.0’s in

I think we need another Nike Free thread. Should I start it?

For the guys who use them with out any socks, what type of odor/cleaning spray do you use for the shoes? I just bought a pair of 7.0s and i love them; I want to take good care of them so they last for a while.

Now for the guys who have more than one pair, why? Are the 5.0 and 7.0 that different to warrant buying one of each? I have the 7.0s and I use them for working out and running. Thanks

For guys who own more than one shirt…why? I mean, can’t you just wear the same shirt everyday for the rest of your life?

I have more than one pair because I have a JOB.

One for walking, one for working out, and one for working out.

I like them because they do double duty for me. Workout shoes, and then if the weathers nice, cheap golf shoes… for those of us on “restricted” budgets…

I just bought a pair of Nike Frees. But for some reason, the only ones I could find were 4.0’s. I can’t seem to find any reference to the 4.0’s, just the 5.0’s and 7.0’s ?

Does anyone know what the numbers actually mean?

Different versions of the shoes meaning different materials in the construction, different tread…etc.

I own an older pair (the 5.0 trainers, in royal blue and white), and they were pretty nice to train in but I find that I need more cushion in runs beyond 3 miles. I use the Saucony Omni 6 for real running, and find their cushioning and support to really do wonders in preventing trauma to the balls of my feet.

Professor X, would you mind telling me how you like the 7.0 in comparison with the 5.0? I just ordered the 7 trainers in the same size as my 5.0s. I got the cheapest pair I could find, so the color isn’t what I wanted, but it’s not “fucked up” either.

With my student advantage discount card and a sale at Footlocker.com, I got mine shipped for a total fo $62.

Not bad! The lowest I could find the 5.0s for was $50, but they weren’t the trainers, and they were only in brown. I did find a 5.0 pair for $29…in the last size available…18. 18!!!

These are what I just bought, and I’ll use them primarily for lifting, and maybe low-impact cardio.

Just got back from the mall where i found the Blue and White 5.0 trainers for $49.00, they were marked down from $90 so im pretty pumped about using them tonight. I noticed the other night when i was doing calf raises that the seams in my last training shoes were starting to bust, so i guess it was time for a new pair.

The Frees are great for calf raises due to the amazing forefoot flexibility.

Enjoy and nice find on that deal!

I like the 5.0’s better as far as feeling like I’m not wearing shoes that hold in all heat and moisture. The 7.0’s are more stabile and have more protection over the top of the foot. It isn’t much of a difference, but if I had to choose which one I would wear all of the time, it would be the 5.0’s.

Which ones would you rather run in?

I wouldn’t rather run in either of them…or any other shoe for that matter. Ask a track athlete that question.

LOL

I was thinking of doing the customization thing for a pair of the 5.0 v2 runners…

I came up with a design with a Marine Corps inspired look. Does it look alright?

[photo]5454[/photo]

In my opinion, it is ugly. But if you wear it with matching Marine Corps stuff, you could pull it off.

I’d be interested in how to keep them odor-free also. We’ve had some pretty decent luck with Fabreeze spray helping keep the smell down from hockey gloves. Unless someone has something better, that’s what I’m going with. Just bought a pair of 5.0 trail shoes, couldn’t find the 7.0 in my size anywhere. Just wearing around the house as it has been suggested to get used to them, they do feel good.
Gold Bond medicated powder usually keeps the odor at bay.
