Nightime Protien

What powder do you guys suggest to take before bed? I have been taking Whey but have been hearing that I should switch to Casein but I am new to Casein and don’t know what to look for in a good powder. My shake at night is taken with 2 tbsp. of natural peanut butter and is for anti-catabolism, not weight gain.

Thanks

Roadblock, how about some cottage cheese?Great source of casin…

Just use cottage cheese, some whey and may be fish or flax oil.

AS for powders on the market the vpx formula worked very well when i tried it in december.

I would go with any natural unprocessed protein source (i.e. eggs, tuna, steak etc.). Whey is processed too quickly keeping you out of catabolism for a short period of time. A lot of times I’ll have my chocolate whey/peanutbutter fix plus eggs/meat to prolong protein absorbtion and keep me anabolic longer. Nightime refeeds help too.

What you are looking for here is something that digests more slowly so that your system gets some protection (anti-catabolism) through the first few hours of the night. Even with a protien that does this, what I hear is that you still only get about four hours of this beneficial effect. Cottage cheese is a good choice or Biotest Low-carb GROW! is also very good. FYI, the chocolate is pretty good tasting too. If you look around a bit, you will find several others on the market that contain good protien blends. You don’t need one that claims it is a nighttime protien (IE-- Nitrovarin and others). While these probably will still do the trick, they are very overpriced for what you get.

I’ve heard that taking nighttime protien with 1-2Tbs of Udos or Flaxseed oil will reduce the speed of absorbtion over just the protien alone. Can anyone confrim that?

An excellent article on this topic:

MEAT
have y’all forgoten about really food?!?!?
higher BV than casien and taste a billion times better.

supplement junkie scum…

Whole foods or I use a 50/50 mix of casien and milk protein. Whey is to fast for what you are looking for.

Thanks for the replies guys, I appreciate the info. I always feel a bit overwhelmed if I eat whole foods before bed. I might try something like 6oz of extra lean ground beef or something. I was using a shake with 60 grams of Protein, 1 tsp. of flax oil, and 5g glutamine(made with skim milk).

RoadBlock the shake that you metioned in the last post is quite good the skim milk will slow the digestion of the protein, there is casin in the skim milk that makes your shake in to a whey casin blend. I have been using that approach for about a year now. Just don’t go crazy on the protein amount or skim milk amount. I ussually just use half a scoop protein and half the regular amount of milk, it works for me.

So you guys actually blend the cottage cheese in the shake? Does it taste decent? Also has anyone tried blending plain yogurt? I’m yet to try any of these, but I’ve thought about yogurt and that doesn’t sound bad.

What flavor of protein shake do you blend the cottage cheese with and what else do you put in it?

I always make mine w/ yogurt + berries…

Almost insignifigant.
Just eat some protein and healthy fats before bed. It can be whole foods or protein shakes.
