What are some good food choices to prevent overnight hypoglycemia? I’ve looked at micellar casein, uncooked corn starch, anything that will burn slow and keep blood sugar stable for 8 hours.
I’d like to know this as well. I just ordered some micellar casein and aussie caseinate to try myself. I’m starting to realize that I am most likely a hypoglycemic person, as I experience every single one of the symptoms associated with it. I’ve tried eating cottage cheese before bed but it makes me nauseous. I just ordered a new bad-ass Waring commercial blender so I may try to blend it up with some ice and flavorings. Anyhow, that’s something you could try…

I doubt that hypoglycemia while sleeping is much of an issue for the average healthy person. Since one’s activity level is basically zero, the body will have little trouble breaking down liver glycogen and muscle protein to keep blood glucose in check.
However im guessing you guys are really talking about keeping the body from going catabolic. I usually wake up once in the middle of the night anyways so I just grab a protein/flax oil shake to keep anabolic. That about cuts the nightime fasting duration in half.
No, no. We are talking about full blown hypoglycemia and the best ways to prevent it from occurring overnight.
I am hypoglycemic too so I know exactly what you are talking about. I find that the only way I can keep myself from having episodes is to ensure there is zero sugar (or sugar-like carbs) in my diet. The closer I can stick to oatmeal, brown rice and yams as my sole carb sources, the better I feel. My body switches over to a different mode. Personally, if I spike my blood sugar at all it can take several days of clean eating to feel normal again. So I guess my question is, have you done this part? If you have, then as long as you eat just before you go to bed you should be fine I would think. I could be wrong of course; this is just me speaking from experience. I find natural peanut butter and protein powder is a good meal before bed.
On a side note, everyone always says how much they hate cottage cheese and how they try mixing it up with sweeteners or fruit or protein powder. Cottage cheese is one of my favorite foods but the thought of eating it with sweet foods makes me gag. Have you tried it as a salty food? My favorite is mixing it with salsa. Try it, its really good. Another thing you can do is blend it up with vinegar, salt and sweetener and use it as a creamy dressing for shredded cabbage and carrots, just like cole-slaw.
There are several things to do to slow the digestion of your bed-time meal:
-
Solid food will obviously take longer to breakdown than a liquid meal.
-
Increasing the amount of fiber will slow the process.
-
Adding fat will also slow the process.
-
You could try adding some guar gum capsules. It will form a gelatinous mass and help slow gastric emptying.

I can verify this as well. I have been hating cottage cheese for a while. I mixed it with yogurt, etc. Then one night I just said what the hell and ate it plain with a little salt and pepper. I actually liked it then! I’m also just starting to learn about myself and hypoglycemia. I’m a bartender and I’m starting to realize that I really cannot drink alcohol at all. It takes me a while to feel normal again after drinking (which tampers with blood sugar levels). Anyhow, try the plain cottage cheese thing before bed. Maybe try a little pure micellar casein as well…
