for any of you guys who are really knowledgeable of bodybuilding on a pro level, serious question:

do any of you see the pendulum swinging the other way anytime in the near future as far as going for a more aesthetic look, and not the bloated monsters/freaks which seem to be winning the shows these days?

i think most on this board, though are in awe of the size of some of these 260-300lb monsters, including me, but we think the look a dexter jackson, or tony freeman is better.

i am not saying we will ever go back to the frank zane look and size, but maybe not 5’7" 250lbs shredded with a huge bloated gh belly big either though.
i could be wrong, but that is what i have gathered lurking the bodybuilding threads. [/quote]

I hav eno insight into pro level but isn’t just the nature of the game that BIGGER guys will always win?

I mean one year you have everybody looking a certain size, then next year 1 guy comes in bigger/leaner and it just doesn’t stop, because somebody will always be trying to come in bigger and leaner so nobody is going to want to come on stage smaller.

I know that a lot of fans have questioned the return of the ‘prettier’ or aesthetic builds, but it’s not because these guys are beating larger competitors, merely that some of the larger ones are bringing shapelier physiques (ie. Dexter, Phil, Rhoden, Cedric).

With guys like Phil and Rhoden, you’ve got size, shape, and conditioning. THat’s why there’s so much chatter about McMillan. He’s got size and just amazing shape (especially for a teller guy). Conditioning wise, he’d get eaten for breakfast by top guys at the Olympia unless he figures out what he’s been screwing up lately (despite taking top spots in lesser shows).

It seems, IMO, that things are trending towards those who were “born with it” and less towards the blue collar BB’ers (a la Dorian, Branch, Cutler) who pack massive size but don’t have some of the natural advantages… whether it’s muscle bellies, waist ratio, insertions, etc. At the end of the day, yes, people want to see the freak with great mass win. Guys like Rhoden and Cedric are starting to bring a nasty combination of today’s mass with the classic frames of the past, and it’s apparent even if they come into a show off. They both need to put on some size to give serious contention to the champs, but I feel like the top athletes in the sport will start to continue to trend towards guys who balance the aesthetics along with mass the best.

thanks for the responses.

so i googled cedric mcmillan, im sorry if i seem to have an uneducated eye as far as top level pro bb goes, but what is mcmillan missing right now???

also, when talking about guys who bring todays freaky size along with the old days proportions, that is, tiny waist, ultra wide shoulders, big quad sweep, and that coveted “X” frame, why is Dennis Wolfe not included in those discussions???

he’s not missing anything he looks great

but to SERIOUSLY have a chance against kai or heath at the O - he needs to be alot bigger and leaner

he generally does not have top notch conditioning in shows

he has amazing aesthetics and looks brilliant - but Heath amd Kai are FREAKS and Ced would be completely dominated by both in a show at the moment

personally - if the physique Kai brought last year could not beat Phil i don’t think anyone else is going to come close without some dramatic changes

i would guess Ced would need to come in ALOT leaner while also having 20lbs more muscle

those are both HUGE if’s because so far he has NEVER had freaky condition before and he is pretty old so a large increase in muscle is a tall order

may be wrong but that pic looks photoshopped to me

it will be interesting to see how Ramy and Ced/Rhoden stack up against each other as that will be a pretty clear barometer

if i had to put money on it - i see Ramy placing higher, particularly vs Rhoden

hope i am wrong as do not like the ramy look at all especially vs Ced

Very true indeed. Ramy is kind of interesting in the fact that if he comes in on point and at his best, he may have a “not bad enough” waistline to actually make some serious noise. Like it or hate it, freak factor is always going to have some pull.

Either way, the lineup this year is just absolutely nuts.
