New to Weight Lifting

Hey guys im new to this, i have lifted a little but not enough to know what i was really doing. Im 35-male-6-2,260 and i have alot of body fat, mostly the gut area, i really just want to lose some weight and fell better, maybe ill see the results and really want to get big, like i said i really am a beginner.

Does my age have alot to do with me getting results i want or can this be a barrier? I have a coworker who works out alot and he said he would work with me some. Should i start out on heavy weights i am a little strong? Just somebody give me some basics i will do cardio also!! Thanks guys, really look forward to being a member here!!

Welcome to the group!

I just started lifting last October and was in much the same situation (wanting to loose that belly). I recommend starting off with a total body training program that focuses on compound lifts, squats, dead lifts, bench press, overhead press… Start light and work into the heavier weights to give your joints, ligaments and muscles a chance to adapt. The name of the game is “Avoid injury” because injuries have a tendency to kill a life style change like this.

Get your partner to help out with form and post videos on this forum for feedback. I’ve found it an enormous help.

Age - you are still young, read up on some of the logs here and you’ll see that at 35 you are just starting…

Welcome and agreed. Start with more reps. Theres a misnomer about getting strong: you have to lift heavy. Not as true as it sounds. You can get strong by reping as well. Give your body a chance to acclimate.

Welcome 3darcherguy. There must be a back-story to that handle…

Age has little, if any limiting effect on your progress. Your habits in and out of the gym have the greatest impact - what you eat and how much, how much you permit/encourage recovery and whether you commit to continual progression in the gym.

Welcome and ditto all dog says. As for being 35, not a factor at all. Why at 35 I could…never mind.

Welcome also. Ditto the above re taking the time to let your body get used to pushing the weights around. There are a heap of good beginner programs around. Go to the beginners section and look at the “stickys” there, in particular:

http://www.T-Nation.com/free_online_forum/sports_body_training_performance_bodybuilding_beginner/must_reads_for_beginners and

http://www.T-Nation.com/free_online_forum/sports_body_training_performance_bodybuilding_beginner/are_you_a_beginner_ii

that will keep you busy for a while.

Burnesy

Stick with this life style change and I promise. At fifty you will be feeling better than you ever thought possible. Don’t try to rush it. Just stay the steady course. Next thing you know it will be you offering up advise to beginners.

Welcome to the rest of your life. It’s going to be a blast. Stay strong and live long.

hello archer guy

I would recommend compound full body work outs. Learn to fall in love with dead lifts, squats and pressing. It is actually very simple-you are all ready big so lift big and you will be happy with the results.

Check around this site in the article section and you will find info on reps, sets and tempo. But remember get a handle on the food and don’t give up because of one bad day or week. Also look in to a set of weights at home- you can squeeze in a 30 minute workout before work or during a busy week end

I agree with daudowen. Full body compound and basic lifts will give you the best results. I recommend Starting Strength by Mark Rippetoe. I think most people on this site will agree with me. That is where you should start.

I disagree.

Well…No, I don’t. Starting Strength is an excellent beginner program.
