New to Powerlifting

Hi all

I just started training in a powerlifting gym about a month ago - I’ve always wanted to be a powerlifter but my local gym was a bit of a gym rat fitness suite thing - full of treadmills and weight machines etc, itrained there for a couple of years with negligible gains.

Having trained for just under a month this is all totally new to me but my numbers are already bench 125kg, dead 200kg, squat 150kg - so a bit of natural strength there.

Would anyone be able to point me in the right direction in terms of the numbers i need to shoot for in order to compete - a long way off i know but be nice to have a target.

Im 31, 6 foot 1, 290 lbs 25% body fat.

Thanks all - i’m aware that i need to sort my diet out!!

If you can squat, bench and deadlift a 45lb bar, you can compete. And if you want to be a powerlifter, go sign up for a meet. It will be a great learning experience, and no matter what your numbers, other lifters will cheer you on. You will get a chance to possibly meet other powerlifters in your area and have people to train with.

Thats it. If you want to do something, just find a meet and go do it. Don’t feel like you need to wait for your numbers to be in a certain place before you can. It will be a good learning experience and you’ll be glad you did it.

I recently did my first meet and you’re stronger than me. Different weight classes, but who cares. If you really want to be a powerlifter, I’d pick a meet a few months in the future and just train my ass off for it. I don’t see the point in waiting.

I’m also going to compete for the first time later this year, after I turn 50. I went to watch my first meet a few weeks ago, and it was very instructive. It was cool to see how experienced lifters did things, and how the meet was run as well. I can’t give you any advice as far as numbers that would be better than others, other than to at least make your openers something you can confidently hit, which should give you confidence to go bigger on the next lifts. Good luck!
