New Study on Chocolate Milk

your thoughts.

This isnt news. Chocolate milk is an awesome recovery drink.

Around here we suggest it as a PWO drink of Surge isnt viable.

Plus, chocolate milk tastes amazing.

it’s almost like Berardi has been saying this for years…

Good luck getting Biotest to tout Chocolate milk over Surge but it is cheaper and tastes great. Makes sense to me for a post workout drink.

Am I correct that chocolate milk was the only one of the three drinks containing protein? If so, why wasn’t this explicitly mentioned in the article as it clearly seems to be the decisive issue?

Well the Endurox actually has 13g of protein per serving. So they were calling it a “carb” drink in the article, but it really has carbs (52g), protein (13), and fat (1g).

And actually describing why protein is important goes beyond the scope of the typical braindead journalist today. They hate actually dealing with facts or anything that isn’t totally superficial.

But they did at least point out the milk is cheaper than the alternatives (probably tastes better than Endurox).

Chocolate Milk: The New Sports Drink?

During a 2004 Summer Olympics awash in controversies over steroids and supplements, one sportswriter wryly noticed that top American swimmer Michael Phelps was playing it safe – he preferred to drink Carnation Instant Breakfast between races.

Now it appears that the six-time gold medalist may have been onto something. A new study shows that plain old chocolate milk may be as good – or better – than sports drinks like Gatorade at helping athletes recover from strenuous exercise.

The study, published in the International Journal of Sport Nutrition and Exercise Metabolism, was small in scale; it was partially funded by the dairy industry. But dietitians say the study should help to counter the notion that high-tech, expensive supplements are better than whole foods when it comes to athletic performance. They also note that milk contains key nutrients, such as calcium and vitamin D, in quantities that sports drinks can?t match.

?[Milk] is a sports drink ?plus,?? Keith Ayoob, EdD, a registered dietitian and associate professor of pediatrics at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, tells WebMD. ?It will supply you with things you need whether or not you?re working out.?

How about adding two scoops of MD?

As a comparison, how effective do you think would say 18-24oz chocolate milk be relative to Surge for all the PWO needs? like 80-85%?

Chocolate milk is great if you get the good stuff.

I’m not disagreeing with using milk for post-workout, it’s not the Holy Grail. Take a closer look at the article

“The difference between the milk and the fluid-replacement drink (note: this was Gatorade) was not significant.”

and

“The [mlik study] netted different results than an earlier study that found participants exercised 55 percent longer after drinking Endurox than they did after drinking Gatorade. The [milk study] concluded the aberration may have been because of methodological differences in the experiments ? most notably that subjects in the other study exercised at a more strenuous pace than in the [milk study].”

So we have two studies, one concludes milk is similar to Gatorade and superior to Endurox. The second study concludes that Endurox is superior to Gatorade.

My conclusion would be that we need more research, but in the meantime make sure you are at least using something for recovery.

I’ve been using chocolate milk since I started lifting…usually I use it so I can save Surge for the tougher workouts, but right now I’m using it exclusively until I can afford more Surge!

I’m always cautious of the latest research until it has been duplicated.

Also, keep in mind that the article does say [quote]The difference between the milk and the fluid-replacement drink was not significant.[/quote]

This could mean that the many “energy” drinks on the market are pretty much worthless.

Whey, dextrose, 1/4 cup chocolate milk and the rest water is how I make my workout drinks.
Its a bit logical that milk would be good as it is made up of whey and lactose. The chocolate part just makes it delicious.

I get my chocolate milk on the black market and it has about 80g of protein per serving. Now mind you it’s expensive- like $40 a pint, but the shit is worth it. Guys I know been hittin’ the c-milk for years and can recover from a tough workout in 8 seconds flat. Shit is addictive too. Watch out.

that article is lame.

what does “until exhaustion mean” ? did this take 4 hours ? 4 minutes ? were they pussies ?

what does “chocolate milk” mean ? milk with melted chocolate folded in ? whole milk ? skim mlk ? what kind of chocolate ? ovaltine ? nestle-quick ? hershey’s chocolate colored corn syrup ?

what brand is most recommended? And I also assume that you all are referring to skim choclate milk?

Skim? Seriously? That’s just milk flavored water.

Well I just assumed one would want fat intake to be low immediately PWO. Plus, choclate skim is not all that bad compared to regular skim.

there’s nothing magical about a recovery drink. gatorade or chocolate or whatever. what you want after your workout <and before your workout, and during your workout, if you ask me> is CALORIES. carbs, protein, fats, it’s all good in the hood.

change it up. have some yogurt after your workout. a powerbar. a peanut butter and jelly sandwish. chicken and bacon wrap, whatever. nutrition is important around that time. NO BRAINER.

Chocolate milk should not be as good Surge. The key is having a fast digesting sugar and fast digesting protein in the correct ratios. So I think skim milk should be better than regular milk. But milk protein will not digest as fast as hydrolyzed whey.
