New, Need Help Gaining Weight

Ok i'm new here and i'm in need of some desperate help on gainin some weight. I'm only 17 @ 5'6 150lbs and i'm tryin to get up to 180lbs. I'm currently eatting about 2800-3000 cals a day (thats what i count, not including what i just eat at random) and have only gained 3lbs in 3 weeks.

I know it takes time, but i’d like to be gaining 2lbs a week. I don’t care if its fat, i can lose fat easily. I’m eatting as much as i have time for, i eat a ton. Everyone at school is helping me out also and they give me everything they don’t want, but don’t worry its good and clean.

I know i need to eat more but i’m a full time student, i work 4 days a week and i lift 3 days a week. Is there any simpler ways to add more calories to my diet? I was thinking that i could make a lamb stew and add that into my diet. Cause i could make a big pot every week and just heat it up for dinner every night and eat that on top of what i already eat.

I’m just in some desperate need of some help, cause i’ve posted on other fourms i’ve used and not 1 person has tried to help me and on one forum my crap was deleted. Thanks.

Try 4000 cals then.

If you haven’t already.

Some tips I have found useful…
Don’t go anywhere without food - i like beef jerky for emergencies.

Breakfast - eggs, eggwhites, vegies, beans, wholemeal toast, protein shakes…
Repeat for 2nd breakfast.

Cook up 500g of mince beef each morning(or night), eat it in two meals for lunch, each with a big serving of spinach, carrots, walnuts, some flax oil, some fruit and a glass of milk.

Its all about routine.

Eat more. 3 big meals per day has showed to make bigger gains then 6 meals per day.
Study was posted here a few weeks ago.

Getting enough calories was also a problem for me. I have managed to go from 147lbs to 182lbs natural at 6’ and about 10% bf in just over a year and a half and that was by gradually increasing calories from 2500 to roughly about 3500 atm. Im sure if you keep eating 3000+ and lifting right, ie focusing on compound lifts you’ll make continued progress.

Also, if your really intent on upping the calories to put on weight faster, try making your own weight gainer. Forget the store bought kind since they are generally full of sugar. My own recipe iv been using for the last month looks like this:

2 scoops of chocolate whey protein
1 cup of milk
tbspn of flaxseed oil
tbspn of olive oil
tbspn of peanut butter
a handfull of mixed berries
you can add half a cup of oats if your not worried about the carb/fat combination
a scoop of icecream

blend it up and it looks like shit but it actually tastes pretty nice. It comes to about 800-900 calories with the oats

i made my own weight gainer shake and it has 2 scoops whey, peanut butter, oats, milk, and creatine (i only put in in the morning) and a banana. I did the math and it comes out to around 800 calories. I talked to my dad and he said “just give it time and lift like you do and it’ll come” i know everything takes time.

Deer seaons in so when i get some deer meat, i’m gonna get alot of it turn into jerkey. I take food with me everywhere, i take protein bars to class, along with sandwhiches, wheat thins, chicken breast, bread, i take all kinds of things and everything looks at me like i’m some kind of fat ass, but i’m still not gaining.

I got another question, when i work i normally work 5-6 hour shifts and my boss is real anal bout letting me eat on the job, so how could i get around this?

Hey champ,

you can try a few things, eat good protein for your 3 main meals, and try some rice a cup of cooked rice for at least two of them, and have a shake between meals and have one before bed. Eating mostly clean calories would be better if you can manage to get them from rice and all that.

As for your boss and eating at work, you could try a RTD, or a bar, im not fond of most bars as they are high in sugar. Or you can always take a chicken breast wrapped up and say u need to go to the bathroom and chow it down. lol.

Have a look on here there should be a gainer you like.

Good luck champ

I told the people at my new job I was a smoker just so they’d let me have five minute breaks where I go out to my car to slam a protein shake. I’m not positive about the labor law but you should be allowed an updaid meal break during a 6 hour shift. 1 lb a week isn’t too bad though, think long term, thats 52 lbs in a year if you keep it up.

If you are looking to add calories, you need to let us know about your diet. Just for starters, nuts have a lot of calories in a single serving. That is only about 3 TBSP. That is something you can carry in your pocket and eat when you want.

Also, you can get extra calories by consuming the full fat version of foods. Like whole milk or regular salad dressings (some low fat ones, too).

All the suggestions everyone else points out are good. Especially the one about taking a short break to consume a shake.

Yeah, i kinda figured that my diet would be needed to get help on fixing it. Well this is it, before school i eat 6 eggs, 2 slices of whole wheat bread and a protein shake with oats, creatine, peanut butter, whey, and milk. For lunch i eat 3 pb&j sandwiches with 4 cups of milk, chex mix, a banana or apple or both and a bottle of water. For dinner, now this is where i think i’m losing. I eat whatever mom cooks, a can of tuna, chicken or ham, a protein shake, a banana and a protein shake.

I try and keep everything as clean as possible because 1. its better for me 2. I think junk food is disgusting except for the occasional pizza and on lifting days i add in another meal before i lift and a protein shake also, along with a bigger then usual meal before bed.

Right now i’m on a 6 week full body program and i’m half way through, now i have noticed the 3lbs i’ve gained and my lifts are going up like crazy. I got 325 for reps on squat and a 245lb deadlift and it was all easy, my shoulder press has gone up, just about everything has gone up but no size gains.

I’ve read that its normal, but if eat a little bit more could i be able to put on good weight not fatty weight?

For someone trying to gain weight, that isn’t bad. Of course, you are lacking in a lot of vegetables. Those things are actually good for you.

Next, you can still add more calories. How about a turkey sandwhich with cheese and mayo as a replacement for one of those PB&Js? That would increase the calorie content. You could replace the chex mix with some mixed nuts or even trail mix.

My question, how can you eat all of that? (you don’t have to actually answer this)

Next, you say you are only lifting 3 days a week, but, are you doing any other exercise? Ride a bike to school? Walk to school? All that matters since it burns calories. If you are doing a lot of extra stuff, you are going to need more calories.

Do a search on Scrawny to Brawny as well as reading the articles posted above.

haha, you sound like everyone else “how the hell can you eat that much food in one sitting?” I have no clue, the funny thing is, i still want more food, just my 30 minute lunch break is up. I only bring my sandwhiches, because my friends are supportive and give me everything they don’t eat, that i’ll take or they just bring it for me.

I hate going out to eat with my friends or other parents cause it takes so much to fill me up, i clear my plate and everyone elses every time. I don’t know where it all goes though. When my mom goes grocery shopping soon, i’ll tell her to get more veggies and nuts and stuff like that. I think i’m bout to buy a car so i need as much money as i can get to put down so i’m short on supps and food for a little bit.

I haven’t been doing any cardio or anything else lately because i’m barley gaining weight and once i get my diet all figured out to the point where i can gain a few lbs a week i’ll start cardio again.

Hey,
It is a good idea like someone said to you in this post, to carry some nuts around in your pocket and snack on them.

And you can go for the higher fatty food’s like some one also said, But if I was to do it just IMHO I wouldn’t go for things like normal mayo and anything that has a high bad fat content, I mean I’m only 24 and after a period of trying to gain weight and eating normal foods, my cholesterol was up at 7.7 which is not good, It is down now after eating lean and clean and non fat foods and you know what, my gains are good!
Just something to think about health is most important on my list.

But it is up to you champ and like I said Im not saying anyone’s post and idea’s on here a no good.

Good luck

yea, i hadn’t been out to eat in forever and my best bud and i went to eat and we were talkin bout diets and stuff and i told him bout the nuts thing and he and i are both gonna try it out. Is there any other little things like that that i could just carry around and eat?

i like this forum better then anywhere else because everyone else knows what they’re talkin about and everyone is more helpful.
