5x5 really gets tough. Maybe I should save deads and squats for last. Or maybe switch back to 5/3/1.

5x5 is rugged with big squats or bid deadlifts.
nice work Steve solid training.
serious work going on here steve. sadly, you have put yourself on the menu by abandoning 5/3/1
mj, I think he might be too tough and sinewy.
Great work Steve. Those are really heavy 5x5’s on the deads and squats. My back just got sore from reading it. Hope I can walk tot he kitchen to eat something.
And I agree about the 5x5 on lower body. It is absolutely killer. Of course, I am a pansy. So it could just be me. I mean, my wife just started doing it. But I haven’t pushed the weight up on her yet .
Thanks guys. I’d keep a town fed for an entire winter. Pussied out a bit and dropped down to 3 sets of 5. Moved my squat stance in a bit. Much more comfortable.

Gonna hit squats again tonight. Trying to squat more often for a bit. I have to learn to love the squat.
Kids have 3 friends staying over tonight and my wife is working third shift. 5 boys between 10-12 years old vs me. The house is going to be a huge mess I’m sure.
On reviewing that lifting it looks like that had to hit you pretty much everywhere. Doing the cleans third must have been hellish.

Well, unless any of them are particularly strong for their age, I’d put my money on you!
Joe,this is a Ripptoe starting strength workout. Basic big exercises. Don’t think I’ll ever get out of the beginner phase. Don’t know if I want to.
Brett, luckily this is a good group of boys. Very active but very polite. It should be a lot of fun.
Clean&Pressx3 make sure these are fast not grinders.
chinupsx5
deadlifts x2 progress to 3’s over time like 3,2,2,2,2–next workout 3,3,2,2,2 when all are 3’s go up in weight.
bench x5 same as deads 5,4,3,3,3–5,4,4,3,3
row x5 good control
sqaut x3 sqauts same way as bench and deadlift.
Great routine just need to structure it differntly when applying to a really strong guy.
How ya doin steve?
Rick
Things are looking good Steve. I’m enjoying the back to basics stuff myself. A 3 boy sleep over is FAR BETTER than a 3 girl sleepover, trust me!
Great work, Steve. Everytime I see you bench less than 300#, though, I wonder to myself why you took a day off…lol.
Good luck with the crew.
Good to hear from you Rick. I’ve been great. I tried that progression but got really impatient. I’m trying the Ripptoe workout until I stall. Then I’ll switch back to 5/3/1. Something in my brain needs to see the weight change every workout. I have many issues.
Wilson, most things in life are best kept basic. Workouts included. I can’t imagine all that estrogen under one roof. You’re a brave man.
Skip, trying a slower progression with the bench. I hope it works because I’v been stuck at the same bench weight for years.
Starting strength is solid , but it can kill you too
nice work.
can you let the boys sleep in the basement?
or in a tent.
this could be your chance to hit the jim beam blast your music
trash the house with pizza boxes and blame the kids.

The basement is finished so a lot of the sleepovers end up down there. I’ll be the only parent so I can’t drink (wiping a tear). Have to be responsible once in awhile. Nice work remembering my drink of choice.
A house full of guys? This could get out of hand!

Just dad home:
‘dad can we have a fire?’…sure
‘dad can we have a sip of beer?’…sure
‘dad can we shoot the neighbors windows with the bb guns?’…sure
Mom home:
no

Dads are so much more fun. We never fully migrate from being a kid to being responsible. We only grow up as much as we have to.
I’ll never grow up
