look at the snatch/clean exercises that focus on posture and technique (i.e. halting snatch deadlift), very informative. they are even helping me immensely, that should say something, because you know, I’m awesome.

Oly lifting is hard. And from what I’ve seen of your vids, you have great potential considering the short time you’ve been doing it. It’s such a delicate balance of strength, flexibility, and finesse. Putting it all together is a huge challenge. Wish I could do it again.

Deb, actually no, it wasnt my coach it was a fellow lifter at my gym. A woman that used to be a PLer and then switched to Oly. She said that at first she couldn’t let DLing go but then realized that “the goal of the goal is the goal” or something that (I dont know, she quoted Dan John). Point is, she thinks that if you’re doing Oly you should do Oly and nevermind the rest. I don’t disagree tbh. But I stopped DLing for 2 reasons 1) it was taking too long to recover from 2) it was teaching me bad Oly habits i.e. the first pull.

Of course if my coach had his way I’d be doing Oly lifts 4x a week.

German, I totally agree! And for the most part he is teaching me well - particularly in light of the gender difference. I hate to say it, but coaching women is hard. What with all our ‘feelings’ and stuff. And I always say i’m totally coachable, but I know I can be a real jerk sometimes.

Lol! You’re totally right Kimba. But I’m a bit of an over-reacher. You know people always say, you should expect the worst, that way you’ll never be disappointed. I’m the opposite, i expect the best - and yeah, i do get disappointed. HA!

Tell me about it Cal, my shoulder is seriously in pain! WTF? I might even get some wrist wraps bc my wrists were starting to hurt last session…I’m glad you’re enjoying the Oly too btw!

Wow Andy! Holy fuck! That link needs to be stickied somewhere. That’s awesome! Thanks!! (just put it in my faves)

The ‘floating snatch deadlift’ - that’s what i need to practice! See how he bends his knees outwards. That’s exactly what I’m NOT doing. Hmm…

Thanks Snap! And I wish you could do it too. Anyways, you’re talented enough with the PLing! Last thing we need is for you to start doing Oly and making us all look bad! lol!

Was supposed to do pilates but I had to ditch it. My house is a freaking mess and I have tons of laundry to do, so i’m devoting the day to chores. I also just set up this thing called wi-fi. Welcome to the millenium Mascherano! Now I can log from the kitchen, the bedroom, while i’m taking a bath…endless possibilities really.

Anyways, I also have full body DOMs - so that certainly doesn’t help…

This is the last week that I’m doing the defranco program. The following week soccer practice starts so i’m going to have to re-jigger my training regime in light of practice and games. I’m thinking of changing my lower and upper days to 2 full body days…but what can i do on these days? I’ll have to see.

Have a wonderful week everyone! Be back in two shakes!

Thanks Andy!

I have a DVD and a book I bought from there a couple of years ago but I can’t find the DVD now.

Masch, I was wondering about the deadlift because my trainer is having me do deadlifts similar to the halting clean deadlift from Andy’s link and RDLs. She did tell me to focus on doing deadlifts with a narrow oly stance, which just happens to be how I’ve always done them. Same with squatting.

But I don’t really deadlift all that much anymore because they are killer on recovery for me too or if I do I don’t push for PRs.

You have an insane training schedule by the way lol, no wonder you can’t get your laundry done!

Congrats on the wi-fi. Glad to hear that you’re taking a rest today, sounds like you need it. Hope the shoulder feels better. I bet you’ll be feeling great and ready to take over the world by tomorrow.

this is great.

Hey Deb! Yeah, that makes total sense that your coach would have you doing DLs. So def listen to her! (him?) They probably know what they’re talking about and what suits you best in your continued growth as an Olympic lifter. Maybe once I start pulling from the ground properly I’ll incorporate some sort of DL variation is need be…who knows! I’m such a newb, at this point i’m as good as a baby soiling its diaper.

Thanks Veggie! The shoulder feels better and I def have more range of motion. I guess I just have to be careful doing Oly AND upper body work consecutively. D’uh.

Bre! Yes it is great! lol! I’m going to go smatter that link on Alexus’ log too.

So I’m working out the details of my new training regime:

Sun - Game day
Mon - Oly Tech/Full body (main lift Front squat)
Tues - Soccer practice
Weds - Oly
Thurs - Full body or Conditioning < thoughts?..
Fri - Oly (w/ back squat)
Sat - OFF

Keep in mind that soccer practice isn’t all that serious, so I’m not killing myself or anything. Also i’m not planning on maxing any of my lifts. I just want to keep my strength up, improve my Oly and play like the Xavi Alonso that I am.

Now, i just need to figure out what I’m going to do on these full body days…all input welcome and MUCh appreciated!

If you don’t have moments of wanting to throw the bar into the mirror of your gym and behead the first two people who try to talk to you then you aren’t taking it seriously.

Well maybe i take it a wee too siriously but you know what I mean. Passionate people care about the things they do. so get mad and take it out on the bar or alternatively your boyfriend.

glad you all found that link useful.

Looks like that plan will work. Be anxious to know how it goes after a week or two.

.

awesome link andy!

i love it for the moment when you do it and it feels effortless and easy. when you are like ‘oh, that was easy, i’m definitely strong enough to do a lot more than that, what was all the fuss about?’

and then of course it is frustrating because you can’t replicate it… but the frustration only makes the elation all the more special when you do get it.

i used to do powersnatches whenever i felt ready to do them and my coach was like ‘no - rest up. take a couple minutes then do the next set’. then he got picky about me only doing x number of sets… he was like ‘this isn’t crossfit…’ i guess i came around to the way of thinking that each set - each rep was special. there weren’t very many of them so maximum effort for every. single. one. if i get one nice lift in a training session i try and hold onto that. its about all i’ve got right now, anyway lol.

sometimes i do get a bit despondent… but the one or two moments each week when it feels right… i guess that makes it worth it for me.

carl darby does deadlifts as much like first pulls as possible (vids on his log in ‘over 35’). i’ve been thinking about doing some of those… just living vicariously through other peoples deadlifts at the moment. was finding they impacted on my recovery, yeah. need to focus on grinding my squats, too…

you are doing great Masch, hang in there!

Everything will come together in time. although your a planner and a worrier like me, so it’s hard not to let all the details make you go crazay!

Joe, I can see it now:

“Get mad Mascherano”
“Grrrr”
“Madder!!”
“Gerrrrrrr!”
MADDER!!
pout “GerrrrRRRR!” < i’m latina, emphasis on the R

Lol! Anyways, for some reason my energy isn’t directed through anger (and my anger is generally filtered through Gin, funny that). Truth is I under-perform when I’m angry, at least on the soccer pitch. And in the weight room I approach the iron with humble approbation - hello lover! This is probably why I’ll never be a power lifter. Ha!

Andy, I <3 you. That is all.

German, you and me both! HAHA! But i think its doable (ever the optimist). We’ll have to see what the output is on the pitch. I’m sure my body is going to be hurting after the first game. Can’t wait!!

A bear sighting! Thanks mama - ain’t that the truth.

Thanks Alexus! You are too right about everything. I’m hanging in there! And thanks for the heads up on Carl’s log! I just checked it out this morning. Brother in arms

MiMsie I miss you!! Thanks girlie! Its true - planners, worriers, haha! A lesson in humility, that’s for sure.

I was excited to put my full body training days together. Here’s what I’ve come up with:

A)
Oly Tech
Front squat 5x5
BD Bench 6x (Bobbi’s method)
Rear delt flyes 4x12
Db lat raises 4x12
Hypers 4x15
Ab rollout 4x15

B)
Pullups 5 sets
Pushup variation 4x12
pullups 5 sets
Standing DB side press 4x12
Front foot elevated lunge 4x12
BB row 5x5

I’ll do this for 3-4 weeks and then switch up the accessory stuff (main lifts front squat and pullups). As you can see, its still kinda a lower/upper split, but I don’t want to do too much legs before my game.

Any critique welcome.

Have a great day lovers!

Edit: looking at this, maybe I should just make it lower and upper splits…UGH! Making up programs is really hard for me!

I think that there is value to full body training when you’re in-season. Like you said, don’t want to hit the legs too hard before games. Plus, I always feel like I get more of a conditioning effect doing full body as opposed to upper lower splits. And you’re still doing oly on other days… I know zip about oly, but it appears that you use your entire body. My opinion is that you will be able to keep your intensity higher on your lifts by mixing upper and lower in the same session. I would also venture to say that you will minimize DOMS by using all parts of your body each session. Just my opinion.

So glad that your shoulder is feeling better!

I think your two days look pretty good, kind of an all around workout, and with the other Oly days I think your lower body will see the volume it needs/likes/wants/hates (depends on how you look at it). You’ll be used to the soccer playing after lifting, it’ll even help loosen up your legs too, I’d imagine.

Not that I know anything really though, I’m still a newb

Just go with what you’ve set up, and stick to it for a while before changing stuff.

Grr right when I leave, you come back out of nowhere ;D

Your full-body routine looks awesome, I totally dig it. I really don’t see how you can burn out with it, which I remember was a concern for you.

Keep kicking ass babe <3

I have no programming advice to offer. But, damn it is hard to fit everything in. If only we didn’t need rest days.

Who said we do? Oh, maybe that was me.

I like Maschy growling. Do it again.

Just so you know, Masch, you just served as a motivational tool for my female coworker. Regarding your body and the weight you warmed up with, she asked, “how did she get arms like that to lift that?” Of course, my reply was simple. “She picked up a damned weight and got under the bar, that’s how.” Made my morning.
