Early this week my mother found out she needed to get an emergency angioplasty. So I was a bit frazzled all week trying to coordinate the hows and whens of the procedure with my brother - she needed to be dropped off, picked up and and then looked after for a few days and unfortunately my pops lives in a land far, far away. cue tiny violins
But I’m happy to say that she went into the hospital yesterday, and now she’s safe and sound at home, in her pjs (i’m in another pair of her pjs, btw - i’ve never met anyone with this many pajamas), and in my caring trust. Of course she’s an excellent patient. But I realize just how teeny, tiny she is - and its a bit scary when invincible mom seems fragile.
Needless to say, i’ve been a bit “tender” this week - feeling all emotional and what not. Which is why when I finished my workout yesterday and saw a note that Coach Joe had stealthily put in my log, i felt really touched.
The note itself had nothing to do with my mom. Rather, during Oly practice on weds Coach and I were talking about how discouraged I get when lifts don’t go my way. And he reasurred me that I would get them, because, as he said, “I had heart”. And when I finally came upon the note, not only was i surprised, but i felt like it was one of those messages the universe sends you -you know, like the kind that resonate in a deep and meaningful way. And it just gave me the warm and fuzzies at a time when i really needed to feel warm and fuzzy.
Anyways, sappy stories aside, here’s where I am in terms of training:
Oly - getting better! I can now tell when a lift is done well because it feels “smoother”. I’m predominantly pulling off the floor on the snatch and clean. Got one ugly 30k snatch (which i’m not counting as a full snatch), and missed my other attempts. Got a couple 35k cleans, but still push pressing, not split jerking.
Conv DL - worked up to 5x175 < trying to remember the lever action, ass down, be the gorilla
Sumo DL - worked up to 5x195 < was supposed to do 200, but i somehow misread my numbers and redid last weeks numbers! Oops. oh well.
Pullups have been going a bit to the wayside to be honest - working sets of 5, not my usual 10. So i need a bit of a kick in the ass with those.
However, started weighting my chinups with 10lbs and got 5, 4, 4, 3, 3 on my last w/o.
DB bench press, using Bobbis method - got 6x45, 3x45, and then with a spot 8x45 < WTF?! Not sure whether to attempt 50s yet?
Other than that, still doing other lifting stuff - hip thursts, lunges, back and shoulders. Also still front/back squatting, but i’m working those as Oly assistance, so evs. I have to get over myself tho and start using my Oly shoes to squat. But I squat at my commercial gym I feel like a baffoon wearing them.
Also started dicking around with the wrist straps Coach Jer Jer (my nickname for Coach Jerry) gave me - did some rack pulls below the knee, 3x3x185 also some bent over rows 5x105 and 115. I’m hell bent on rowing my BW now.
And yeah, that’s it.
Oh! And while at the gym I saw a woman practicing flamenco in one of the studios! I used to dance flamenco, so I approached her in the locker room and she gave me her card, said she teaches classes. I think I might just dust off the ol’ zapatos and get in the studio. I could use a little yin to my yang ![]()

I’m glad your mom is doing well and that you were able to be there for her. My dad had his first coronary angioplasty nearly 25 years ago. He’s going to be 70 this year. Heart disease can be very well managed.

Glad your mum is doing OK - I know it’s tough when a loved one has to go through a big op because you feel pretty helpless, but sounds like you’ve got plenty of support there. Props for going and working out despite your worries.

So never mind me, I’m just popping in here to put in these cues that I got from Git’s log so that i remember them for later.
Conventional DL Cues
- If you start with the bar about mid-foot, your shins will be 2-3" away.
- As you get down into your stance and grab the bar, it will now be almost in contact with your shins. For me, if the bar is actually touching my shins I find it more difficult to pull back. I like about an inch clearance.
- You will see that you knees come over the bar somewhat.
- Quick checklist before pull is: butt down, contract erectors, get shoulders behind bar (not the whole shoulder just the mid-point), shift weight to mid / rear of foot, flex arms to straighten (so I don’t fuck my biceps),
- Checklist while pulling is: squat the bar up (drive feet into floor), keep flexing erectors (if I stop doing this with any weight i WILL fuck up my back), bar touching legs all the way up (to keep bar close to centre of gravity), bring hips through, tell myself how awesome I am
Also, just as a reminder that I’m a lazy douche - today i only did 31 total pullups (down from 34) since I stopped doing my usual 10 sets exactly a month ago…grr…me no likey!
I did have a mad pump tho since i supersetted them with zottoman curls and various pushups. But I was too much of a pussy to try the clapping behind your back pushups like Coyote does…dude, i’m afraid I might faceplant!
