Nerve Damage

Does anyone know of any supps (legal or not) that can help with nerve damage?

Alpha lipoic acid is used as a treatment for diabetes induced nerve damage in Europe. It’s usually combined with Vitamin E. I don’t know if it would help in your case.

Vitamin B12 is key for nerve health.

You might also want to look into some nootropic drugs (available without prescription over the internet, at least for now), as some have been shown in preliminary trials to induce nerve and neuron growth.

Hey thanks for the reply Nephorm. I will grab some ALA, E, and B12 today. Do you know any of the nootropic drugs by name or where to actually get them? I’ve been searching the net for weeks and haven’t found anything that’s actually available. Just to let you know what’s up, I wa in a car accident in April and I fratured two vertibrates in my neck (c6 and c7) and shattered a hinge. I’m alive, back in the gym and gaining size back (but only my left side.) A major nerve on the right side of my body was damaged and my right arm, pec and lat are beginning to atrophy despite training, a bulking diet and some gear. I am losing hope here. The doc says the nerve damage may be permanent, but I don’t want to believe it. Thanks again dude.

I replied to your other thread (may need to go back a couple pages) with a reference to Prokarin.

Let me preface this by saying I am not a doctor. I have heard great accolades for piracetam, first off. I’d recommend that because it has been shown to assist in fine motor development, which you may be losing over time as a result of the nerve damage.

Idebenone has been shown to resemble ubiquinone, which promotes secretion of nerve growth factor. This may be what you’re looking for. I’d recommend you pick up a book like “Smart Drugs II,” and weigh your options. Most of these nootropics have few or no side effects, and any they might have are not permanent. Good luck.

Hey thanks guys, Brider, I never knew they posted my other threads. I didn’t know what was up. I submitted those threads under the steroids and drugs board, but I guess whoever was monitoring the boards decided it was more appropriate on the training board. Thanks again…

I know this is an older post, but there have been studies that show the medication ‘gabapentin’ also known as neurontin helps with nerve damage. I’d watch out though, it’s quite sedating and definitely has mood altering effects… slightly depressing. Still… if your nerve damage is severe, you might want to talk to your doctor about it and gabapentin.

Inosine aids stroke recovery

In what is being referred to as a landmark study, researchers at Children's Hospital in Boston have found that the naturally occurring compound inosine stimulates nerve fiber growth in the brain and spinal cord, aiding in the recovery of function following a stroke. The report was published in the June 25 2002 issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

In rats in whom a stroke was induced, one group was given inosine while the remaining rats served as controls. Animals treated with inosine showed a greater ability to place their paws on a table when their bodies were lowered toward it than the untreated group, and after nineteen days the treated animals demonstrated almost normal ability while the untreated rats experienced only half these gains. In a second experiment, rats who were trained to grasp food through the bars of their cages showed greater post-stroke recovery of their ability to use the stroke-effected paw. In addition, rats recovering from strokes given inosine regained their ability to swim normally after eight weeks, while untreated rats did not. When their brains were examined, treated rats showed three to four times the amount of compensatory growth of neurons into areas that had lost their normal connections than untreated animals.

Principle investigator and head of the laboratory at Children’s Hospital, Dr Larry Benowitz, stated, “These findings are of both scientific and clinical interest. The study shows that inosine induces a great deal of rewiring in the brain after stroke. This rewiring is apparently sufficient to promote substantial functional recovery. In terms of clinical implications, inosine, which appears to have no apparent side effects in animals thus far, has potential as a novel nerve regeneration approach to treatment of stroke and other types of brain injuries.”

Acupuncture…
no drugs, no mess… Brought my arm back to life when I had a totally fried nerve from my neck to the crook of my hand…

Also, DMAE is worth a shot… it’s one of the ingredients in power drive, and is a nootropic. The nice thing about nootropics, btw, is that you can take a bunch of them at the same time without problems (though you might need choline supplements, as they could cause you to run more quickly through your acetylcholine supply). Also, don’t buy acetylcholine as a supplement; it can’t pass through the blood/brain barrier.
