Need Some Help Starting Out

Maybe I wasn’t clear when I said “he’s not asking about building muscle”. He said he’s 150lbs and he wants the A&F model look, which he guesses to be around 170-175. So yes, I suppose he believes he’s asking how to gain 25lbs of muscle. And, if he’d posted asking how to gain 25 lbs, I’d be thrilled to offer any advice I could. However, I disagree that that’s anywhere near what those models weigh. I know a guy who’s done some modeling for them. He’s probably 5’8" and no more than 150lbs soaking wet. So if the OP’s currently at 150lbs, all he probably has to do to reach his goal is cut body fat, and maybe add a little bit of muscle, but certainly not 25lbs worth. I guess the difference is in what he’s aiming for. Shooting for 175 is fine. Shooting for model abs and guessing it’s about 175lbs is not the same thing.

I agree with everything else in your first post, well said. As I mentioned before, I got a little fired up writing my response and it apparently came off a bit ‘less diplomatic’ than originally intended.

I’m really not trying to be confrontational, but I can tell you that at around 150 lbs and 5’9", I don’t have the sort of muscle on me that some of those guys have, and I have very little fat, so the weight isn’t from fat (at least not much of it). I might as well put it into pictures so you’ll know what I’m talking about. My target upper body is something like this: http://www.ianavery.co.nz/Avo-Abercrombie-Guy.jpg

I’ve attached a pic of myself (I’m the white one on the right). Before anybody goes there, that’s NOT my boyfriend, it’s a guy on the swim team and we were at training camp in Costa Rica… LOL

fair enough, no worries about being confrontational, it’s the internet! Anyway, when I hear abercrombie model I think more along the lines of this: http://www.rodkrato.com/images/news/abercrombie.jpg
Which you should have no problem attaining at 150. The picture you posted though, that might take a bit more work. Best bet, eat, lift, eat, sleep repeat. Oh, and all that other stuff Aragorn said too.

cheers,
Jay

Haha, thanks. I write a lot of long posts here in the beginner’s forums, but I think a lot of things are more helpful if spelled out specifically as a beginner. That, and the more I repeat the advice I’ve learned over the years, the more ideas I get in the middle of a post for further improving and changing my own training. It helps hardwire and extend what I’ve learned (or think I’ve learned :)). Inevitably I come up with new ideas at some point, diff. way of looking at something I thought I knew backwards and forwards.

Hey, “under-achiever” is my middle name. Or “procrastinator”. I’m sure my master’s professors would agree.

Ah, I see. Well, it happens. That’s why I don’t go to the Politics forum unless I’m feeling suicidal. Or homicidal.

Sorry Aragorn,

I have to disagree with you on number six. If you can curl 135, but you can’t pick it up from the floor you have serious issues that probably will never be addressed

Seriously though, great post, maybe even mandatory reading for all newb’s.[/quote]

Hah. Ok, fine. How about this–if you are Magnus ver Magnussen, curl in the squat rack. If you’re anyone else except Mariusz, go away.

Thanks for the compliment!

lol, agreed, although sometimes the politics forum is fun just to play with headhunter’s trolling.
