Hi all. I’ll be posting more photos tomorrow, but I’m having an argument with my Dr. My BMI is 35.9 (271@6’1) and my neck/waist measurement is 35.2. I think he’s being lazy, and it’s affecting my employment.
I’m pretty sure I’m under 30. My calliper tests tell me I’m about 27%, and I’m seeing two different people on Monday to get wider results to bolster an argument against the Dr.
This also serves as feedback, for too long I focussed on lifting and ignored cardio, work capacity, everything. I completely changed my program 2 weeks ago to follow an 8 week Military Athlete program. It’s been fun so far. Results will be interesting.
Back and legs will follow. But please help me estimate my BF%

BMI and BF arent the same thing.[/quote]
This. Your doctor has determined your BMI accurately. (You can check his work yourself by entering your height and weight into an online BMI calculator.) But as dodo points out, BMI is NOT equivalent to BF%. BMI is utterly silent with respect to body composition. (If you were 271# and stage-ready, your BMI would still be ~36.)
FWIW, I would estimate your BF% in the 30-35% range.
BMI is a simple calculation. Unless your doc is terrible at math, there really is nothing to argue about, and words from random people on the internet will have no credibility in his eyes.
Tell us your goals (e.g. need to lose x weight for work, want a six-pack, etc.) and we can help you.
I have a high BMI but the guy who did my testing said I had a good hip to waist ratio and a good O2 max, said I was fine and not to worry about it. This was a general fitness assessment and not a medical.
Now, if this is part of a job, okay you may be 100% healthy but a BMI is a broad stroke to check for indications of health issues. Why would you expect the doc to sign off on that and take ALL the risk when he only has your word on your lifestyle. For all he knows, you’re stuffing krispy kremes all day long. If you had a health issue after he okays you then he is fucked.
Find a different industry to work in or drop fat, lots of it.
Thanks everyone for your replies, I appreciate the honesty.
What I was trying to achieve was an estimate of my bodyfat, as I think the BMI is irrelevant. But that’s an argument for a different day. I honestly thought my BF was far lower than bmi, given I was seeing shoulder and arm veins when training. But I’m happy to admit I was wrong and I have a lot of work to do.
Apoklyps, my aim is to get to 15% BF as quickly as possible. I’m happy with how my strength and work capacity levels are developing. I’ve been following a high fat, low carb diet for the last 3 weeks, but not strictly. I’m working towards fixing that and I have good support from my training partner and gf.
Tsantos, thanks mate. I didn’t consider that aspect of the situation. I have changed my training regime to target fat loss & work capacity and lowered my food intake to roughly 1800 cal a day.
I wish I could help you, but I’m not the best person to give you advice on leaning out.
I have a very gifted metabolism and can get away with breaking 90% of the “rules” about dieting and lifestyle choices, so cutting as lean as I am in my avi requires very little structure. My approach probably wouldn’t work for just about anyone else.
What I will say is that if you make a thread in the Beginner’s subforum and state your goals clearly and politely like you just did, I’m sure a lot of much more knowledgeable guys will definitely be able to point you in the right direction.
