Ok, so I’ve stopped lifting weights months ago because I had put on so much muscle without doing any cardio and ended up weighing a whopping 255lbs…I’m 6’2, so the pain on my knees just walking around was enormous.
I’ve recently lost 30lbs and I am now a much lighter at 230lbs and more comfortable, however all my muscle mass has disappeared. I DO NOT WISH TO BULK UP…I just want to build lean, functional muscle without putting the pounds back on and maybe even lose more weight.
Anyone have any advice on how I can accomplish this? Thank you.

My thoughts are, if you want to build more muscle while not weighing more than you do now, you will need to lose more weight first.
I suspect this isn’t what you want to hear; but it is correct. My guess is another 30-40 lbs.
Lift weights while in a slight deficit, add some more walking to your life, and do something active 10-15 minutes when you wake up at least 5 times a week.

And don’t forget good sleep.
What exactly do you mean “slight deficit”?
Eat slightly less food than your body requires to maintain weight.

It was definitely the too much muscle thing.
There are some structural issues that come up when people go above certain weights, like you mentioned-knees.
Just looking at those pictures makes mine hurt. They look like they’re going to buckle inward at any moment. It may not be that you got so massive that it hurt your knees. It could be that you have too much tension in the wrong places and the mating surfaces of the joint aren’t able to function as they should.
Maybe some stability and mobility work would be in order before going the strength/mass route again.
Nonsense, he had clearly added un-functional muscle and that was causing him structural problems.
OP: I strongly recommend you incorporate combat pyramids into your training. That will ensure you add only functional muscle this time around. Good luck.

Granted, this is just interwebs speculation.
