Need Opinions on Comeback

I’ve been out of the training room for about four years now and have completely lost… well… everything.

Now I’m back at the gym and discussing my comeback plan with my old gym buddies and we have come to the following disagreement:

Which direction should a skinny-fat male first take when they begin training? Should he bulk to put on as much muscle as possible, seeing how he doesnt have any. Or should he get rid of the excess fat first?

With obese and bone skinny individuals the directiong they should take is obvious, but not so with S-F individuals.

I think you should try to add muscle, my friends think you should cut first and add only “quality” weight.

What are your thoughts on this?

PS: I define skinny-fat individuals as carrying around 20% BF, yet they still look like a bean pole with their clothes on.

I wouldnt bulk for sure @ 20% but being fresh to the gym wouldnt exactly diet either. By cleaning up your diet and training you shoukld be able to lose fat and gain back some lost muscle.

This is not so for a trainied person who has become over fat but in the case of a coach potatoe. Yup

Just my opinion.

My opinion: Pose this question directly to someone like CT during prime-time. Get an expert opinion.

I would clean up your diet and slowly build yourself a solid foundation (5x5 or even strongman training), before you start worrying too much about what type of training you should do.
Good luck
