An another website a guy said bodybuilders were slow and inflexible (it was actually a discussion about the new Conan)and I mentioned Tom Platz and how he could do full splits even with his huge thighs…but I can’t seem to find a pic of him doing so with a lot of googling.
Could anyone help me?
How about stoping arguing about bodybuilding with a guy that has no clue what bodybuilding is?
What about Kai when posing in a handstand?
^^ that’ll do too! (I had my head stuck in the 80s.)
I’ve never seen a pic of Platz doing a split, I’ve seen Coleman, though.

I guess bodybuilding does not necessarily make one inflexible but it makes it harder to stay and become flexible. More muscle = more resistance to stretch is the theory as well as muscles getting in the way in some positions and the shortening effect of the lifts themselves. There’s also the diet factor; namely if you’re constantly stuffing yourself with food, that will make it hard to carry out intensive stretching of the torso.
Anyway, if someone took up stretching at an early age and then went into bodybuilding while maintaining their contortions, they could probably still be very flexible but rarely do people do this.
There are many examples of bodybuilders doing some sort of splits, though not always necessarily great ones with hips squared and all. What one never seems to see is bodybuilders demonstrating back flex. I found a few immediately by Googling “bodybuilder splits”.

Flex Wheeler, too.
So what it all comes down to is whether or not someone bothers to stretch with flexibility as a goal. Bodybuilders and powerlifters dont care much for flexibility so they dont focus on it.
Anyone ever hear anything about f how being flexible means you cant be as strong? Horse shit or gospel?

It’s horseshit. I’ve seen several large people perform impressive feats of flexibility. If you want to test the theory, round up several of your non-weigthlifting friends/family and have them try to do a shoulder dislocate or do an ATG squat or even an overhead squat with a broomstick. I bet none of them can do either.
I think a lot of people also confuse joint laxity with flexibility.
DB
I think its fair to say that a bodybuilder will be less flexible than a gymnast.
But also that the bodybuilder is more flexible than all the average skinny fat people who believe that bodybuilders are musclebound and slow.
I hate the fact that I’m inflexible. Since I’m “the guy that works out”, people always blame the weight training. What they don’t get is that I couldn’t scratch my back when I was 150 pounds, and I still can’t do it at 230.

Definitely horse shit. Strength development is required when developing maximum flexibility - the two go hand in hand.
Sure, you can develop outstanding strength without flexibility, but you can’t develop outstanding flexibility without strength.

It’s also fair to say that a gymnast will be weaker than a bodybuilder.
What the fuck is wrong with these people…apparently bodybuilders are expected to be the best at everything, or else bodybuilding suddenly becomes useless and obsolete in their eyes. Bunch of fucktards.
Usain Bolt is faster than bodybuilders, got what wastes of life they are!

It’s fair to say that there is no point in judging one against the other because there is a reason that you’ll not find an elite level bodybuilder who is also an equally successful gymnast.
Nobody with any real musical experience compares a world-class pianist against an equally talented guitarist. But bodybuilding is compared to every other discipline. Why? Because a bodybuilder’s results are seen as soon as they walk through the door (as they are meant to be seen).
Bodybuilders are easily judged because their success in their chosen sport is carried with them 24-7, so usually the people who criticize them the most are the most jealous and are the least qualified to do the criticizing.
When was the last time you saw an Olympic shot putter get into a brawl with a 100m sprinter over who is the most functional? It’s bullshit.
People who say these ridiculous things are usually neither strong, nor flexible.
^^ That’d likely be true, as it was a Star Trek discussion board.
I’m likely stronger than them all as well as having drunk more beer, banged more pussy and pissed more blood than the lot of them.
I stole that last bit.
Flexibility is for pussies and women.
It’s especially good for women’s pussies.
No wait…I take that back. Inflexibility is best there.
