Neck/Arm/Forearm Ratio

Vince (and others) have said Neck, Bicep, and Calf should all be the same measurment for a lean individual for proper symmetry.

He has other symmetry ratios out there, based on Steeve Reeves I believe:

From Steeve Reeves’ book:

Steeve Reeves:

Arms: 18.5 inches
Calves: 18.5 inches
Neck: 18.5 inches
Thighs 27 inches
Chest 54 inches
Waist 30 inches

Arm size= 252% of wrist size
Calf size= 192% of ankle size
Neck Size= 79% of head size
Chest Size= 148% of pelvis size
Waist size= 86% of pelvis size
Thigh size= 175% of knee size

Steve Reevesâ?? height and weight chart for a bodybuilder (natural)
5â??5â?? 160lbs
5â??6â?? 165lbs
5â??7â?? 170lbs
5â??8â?? 175lbs
5â??9â?? 180lbs
5â??10â?? 185lbs
5â??11â?? 190lbs
6â??0â?? 200lbs
6â??1â?? 210lbs
6â??2â?? 220lbs
6â??3â?? 230lbs
6â??4â?? 240lbs
6â??5â?? 250lbs

Anyway, I’d say take it all with a grain of salt. What does “lean” actually mean? Big arms don’t look that impressive on someone with a lot of body fat while smaller measured arms may look much larger if very lean. It’s bodybuilding. It’s all about an illusion.

Another T-Nation thread on the subject of proportions: https://tnation.tmuscle.com/free_online_forum/blog_sports_training_performance_bodybuilding_alpha/about_proportions_in_bodybuilding

It used to be that people pursued “Greek” or “Golden” proportions. Well, those would barely pass the test at your local gym. With the availability of steroids and legal prohormones it’s hard to say what is “ideal” or what one should aim for. It all depends on how “natural” is “natural” and if that’s even your pursuit. Steve Reeves would probably lose in many “natural” shows today but “natural” just means you passed a drug test on that specific day.

Casey Butt also has an interesting calculator: http://www.weightrainer.net/maximum_bodypred.html

Just a bunch of numbers to aim for and pass…

I think especially the bodybuilder’s weight and height only apply at contest shape (sub 5% bf).
A 6ft (natural) guy at 200lb at sub 5% bf would be very impressive and hugely different from 6ft 200lb guy at 15%.

Neck: 17"
Upper arm: 17.5"
Forearm: 14"

pic was taken about 2 months ago, gained a bit of weight and 1/2" on my forearm and upper arm since then… really need to work on my triceps they are lagging really badly right now… and go on a diet prompto

yeah I was also wondering how you guys measure your neck, if I tense it up I get an extra inch out of it, seems weird to not measure it relaxed though so I’ve put up the relaxed measurement

Neck: 15
Upper arm: 13
Forearm: 11.5
leg: 23.5
calve: 14

shit just got serious :stuck_out_tongue:

threw in calves and legs sense i made the effort to break out a measuring tape

Mark Henry’s neck is reportedly 22", but it’s hard for me to see how it could be “only” that, as that would be having only 4 1/2" on me, and his neck utterly dwarfs mine.

Mark Henry has a neck?!?

Are we talking flexed or relaxed? My neck is 20.5 relaxed, but if I flex my traps and my neck muscles it’s over 22 inches. How exactly are we measuring? Let me know…

If flexed counts I’ll see if I can borrow a camera…

To me flexed counts.

Neck: 16"
Upper arm: 16.8" (unflexed)
Forearm: 13.8" (unflexed)

Damn I just measured mine and although my calves and arms are bigger (14.5 roughly for each) my neck is only about 13 3/4 - 14in.

Anyone know how much potential there is for neck growth? I clearly have a skinny neck, even more so than some people I know 20-30lb lighter than me

Lots of shrugs and lots of weight gain. Preferably muscle weight gain.

I just started upright rows again for traps/lateral delts, would that help out as well? I figured shrugs/upright rows were more for traps than the actual neck area. Thinking back to a few years ago my neck was around 14in even when I started at around 130lb (same with calves)…what gives :frowning: My traps are actually decent for my weight too…definitely bigger than my 150lb brother who’s neck is slightly bigger than mine.

I’ve gained close to 90 pounds and only put 2-2.5 inches on my neck, so neck growth (I think) comes slow.

That being said, nothing makes my neck tense up like shrugs. I’m not sure you can get the same neck growth from upright rows, then again I’ve never done them consistently because they hurt my shoulders.

Do neck flexion curls with a dumbbell, a beanie and a towel for 3x12 - dont use your tris at all to pull - if you have to do that, lower the weight

OK I went ahead and took a pic with my cell phone. Sorry not great quality. But hey it’s better than nothing…

austin_bicep:

I just posted a pic of my 22 inch neck… Happy?

LankyMofo:

Sorry I didn’t respond to your request for pics in the other thread earlier. You said I sounded like a monster… So what do you think, am I a monster?

Judging from shirt size worn at the time – I never actually measured – my neck was 14 1/2" when starting training, and is 17 1/2" now.

However, as a rough guess an inch of that may be attributable to AAS use.

Many others have gained 2" on the neck drug-free. I don’t know about 3", but that is simple lack of knowledge, not a knowledge that it must be rare.

Good point, the problem is that “contest weight” in Reeve’s day, hell or even Ahnuld’s day, wasn’t sub 5%.

Case in point: Vince Gironda never won a damn thing, because he was deemed TOO defined.
