Necessary Medical Books

I am by no means a med. student nor do I plan on becoming one. I was just wondering what good basic medical books you should have in your artillery. I just ask this out of curiosity actually.

I’m looking for books/book that contain the most common type of diseases, their effects and treatment. Proper treatment against small to nasty wounds. Just about anything you should know in order to be prepared for situations that are critical or not so critical.

I’m actually an engineer student, but I am also very interested in the medical field. I know it sounds stupid, but I love to expand my knowledge of things that hopefully can benefit me or others in the future.

I’m looking for something the average Joe could understand and apply but I don’t want it to be too basic. In easy terms: if you were to educate yourself in the medical field without actually going to med. school, how would you do it?

Not stupid at all. IMO more people ought to think this way.

If you’re looking for something very introductory and broad, you could use an EMS book. I know the standard EMT-B book ( http://www.amazon.com/Emergency-Care-Transportation-Injured-Ninth/dp/0763744050/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1230007012&sr=8-1 ) has enough information in it to be read quickly and be applicable to the basics.

Very basic books/ stuff:

Merk Manual of Medical information- A kind of cliff notes to diagnose symptoms of illnessses.

Greys Anatomy- The bench mark for human anatomical info. There are way easier ones to read, but this is one of the most complete.

PDR- A guide for prescription pills / medicines.

Red Cross first aid / CPR- get certified.

These should get you started.

internets is all you need

Medicine for Mountaineering

one of the best books out there. paperback so it’s easy to drag along.

Thanks for all the really good advices guys. I really appreciate it=)
