NBA Dreams

hi all,

Im a custodian at an elementary school. Today I was playing basketball with the kids and I noticed one kid(6th grader) in particular was very "skilled". I asked him after the game where he learned to play, and he told me that he wakes up at 6.am everyday to shoot around and do drills.HE also studies tape of nba players and writes down notes. He showed me 10 pages of moves and defensive strategies. WTF!!!

I was taken by surprise because you never see kids dedicated to anything these day. He told me he wanted to be a “NBA superstar” when he was older. I told him that reaching the NBA is extremely hard and that he would have to work his tail off and be extremely dedicated to training every single day. His reply took me by surprise, He said that the journey will be the most exciting part of all and that he couldn’t wait!!!

This is a white kid that isn’t genetically gifted with average height parents so the chances of him making it to the nba are very slim but the kid sure as hell inspired me and I hope he inspired you too. CHEERS!

Good for him. Women and life will be the biggest challenge.

He’s doomed to turn into the Todd Marinovich of basketball

How much can you get for this kid on the black market? Is he big-boned? Wide hips? What about his face?

help him out with some med ball drills, sprints, jumps (kid shit).

Right, because what good could come from a kid busting his ass to achieve his dreams?

Ever hear of Wayne Chrebet? He went to high school with me. 5’10 small white kid who was a just a good athlete in high school. He didn’t even make all state for his position. His dad pushed him, he worked his ass off and walked on to the Jets and ended up with a starting position.

He’s a kid so next year he might want to do something very different. But if he makes it, let’s hope he does not commit a felony and end up broke after earning all his millions like a half or so NBA superstars.

yea… for sure… im already writing him a program and i’ll include all of these.

From James Smith

  1. Elevate the heart rate via low intensive activity- jogging, jump rope, etc
  2. Activate Muscles via iso-dynamic exercise (hold a lunge position then do a few lungs, hold a squat position then do a few squats, stationary arm/leg swings, etc)
  3. Dynamic Mobility Drills (eg Parisi)
  4. Drills to improve speed mechanics (skips, buttkicks, high knees, etc)
  5. Technical/balance/coordination (gymnastics)
  6. Throws and Jumps
  7. Calisthenics
8 Finish with playing your games
NO LACTIC WORK meaning give him adequate rest periods and do not do these exercises to failure.
Encourage him to play other sports too.

so um… are you a freak or something? im curious whats “above average” genetics and height?

Encourage him. Here’s why.

When I was a slow 6’2" 140 lb freshman at a small high school I was not much of a shooter, not very physical (clearly) and was only expected to get rebounds because we had a boat load of smaller guys on the team. By my senior year I was still 6’ 2" and a massive 160 lbs and only averaged 14 pts per game. Not many colleges looking for slow, skinny white guys like me. It was clear I wasn’t getting any taller but I still had a dream of playing college ball. Family and friends laughed. I knew I had to do something drastic. (cue Eminem Lose Yourself) I took a year off after I graduated and did the following:

Moved from Cleveland, OH to Stuart, Florida to live with my dad so I could play ball year round.

Started lifted weights M,T, Th, F 5:30 am Ended up at 170 lbs. I know 10 lbs is not huge for a year but considering the massive amounts of cardio it was huge for me. Never lifted before because coach was old school and thought it would hurt us? Damn him!

Dribbling drills minimum 1 hr per day (Mainly by jogging & dribbling with my off hand the entire two miles to the basketball courts and back)

Shooting drills minimum 2-3 hrs per day. I’m talking breaking down tapes of Larry Bird and doing the shit. I would shoot until I MADE 300 shots from 15’ or deeper THEN top it all off with a quick 100 made free throws.

Played on two different rec leagues and played ball just about every night and especially at the beach on weekends.

I basically treated pursuing my dream as a full-time job and didn’t let anything interfere with it. Befriended a local drug dealer that balled at the same courts as I did. He kept me off the shit that everyone else was caught up in around there and got me access to the best games late at night in the hood. Threatened to beat me down if he ever caught me smoking or drinking. Moving to Florida was a lot like being on the interwebz. I decided I could be anybody I wanted to be. When I got there I figured no one knew me so I acted like I had always been a shooter/scorer and shot the shit out of the ball every chance I got. At first, people hated me cuz I still sucked and acted like I didnâ??t but it didn’t take long before I was owning folks.

Played in a summer league the next summer and ended up getting a full ride to play ball in Texas. I know. “Cool story bra.” Just sayin, if a knucklehead non-genetically gifted late starter can get it done, shit, no reason why a young cat can’t dedicate himself to his passion and at least get a full ride out of it. Shooters are not born, they are made. A free college education can be had along with having a ton of fun doing what you love.
