Right, because what good could come from a kid busting his ass to achieve his dreams?

Ever hear of Wayne Chrebet? He went to high school with me. 5’10 small white kid who was a just a good athlete in high school. He didn’t even make all state for his position. His dad pushed him, he worked his ass off and walked on to the Jets and ended up with a starting position.

wow… good for him!! did you know him personally??
We weren’t friends or anything. I was a freshman in 1990 when he was a senior and we both practiced and played basketball together at times. It used to be a small high school so you pretty much run into the same people all the time. He was a real prick in high school and didn’t have many friends. He was really good at all 3 sports but I don’t remember him even making 1st team all county in any of them. He was always quick as fuck but if you told anyone in that high school he’d start for the Jets when he got older they’d think you’re on crack. Even though I hated him in HS, I respect what he did. It was all hard work with his dad pushing him the whole time.

Since he graduated we had 2 other guys make to the NFL. Miles Austin and Luis Castillo I always found this odd since we have a shitty unknown high school that’s never produced any pros in any sport till Wayne Chrebet made it. But Miles Austin was the true gifted athlete out of the bunch.

Thanks for the post man…it’s all about believing and consistently busting your ass each and every session like it was gonna be your last. I’m in the same position just with a different sport.

When I was a slow 6’2" 140 lb freshman at a small high school I was not much of a shooter, not very physical (clearly) and was only expected to get rebounds because we had a boat load of smaller guys on the team. By my senior year I was still 6’ 2" and a massive 160 lbs and only averaged 14 pts per game.

Not many colleges looking for slow, skinny white guys like me. It was clear I wasn’t getting any taller but I still had a dream of playing college ball. Family and friends laughed. I knew I had to do something drastic. (cue Eminem Lose Yourself) I took a year off after I graduated and did the following:

Moved from Cleveland, OH to Stuart, Florida to live with my dad so I could play ball year round.

Started lifted weights M,T, Th, F 5:30 am Ended up at 170 lbs. I know 10 lbs is not huge for a year but considering the massive amounts of cardio it was huge for me. Never lifted before because coach was old school and thought it would hurt us? Damn him!

Dribbling drills minimum 1 hr per day (Mainly by jogging & dribbling with my off hand the entire two miles to the basketball courts and back)

Shooting drills minimum 2-3 hrs per day. I’m talking breaking down tapes of Larry Bird and doing the shit. I would shoot until I MADE 300 shots from 15’ or deeper THEN top it all off with a quick 100 made free throws.

Played on two different rec leagues and played ball just about every night and especially at the beach on weekends.

I basically treated pursuing my dream as a full-time job and didn’t let anything interfere with it. Befriended a local drug dealer that balled at the same courts as I did. He kept me off the shit that everyone else was caught up in around there and got me access to the best games late at night in the hood.

Threatened to beat me down if he ever caught me smoking or drinking. Moving to Florida was a lot like being on the interwebz. I decided I could be anybody I wanted to be. When I got there I figured no one knew me so I acted like I had always been a shooter/scorer and shot the shit out of the ball every chance I got.

At first, people hated me cuz I still sucked and acted like I didnÃ?¢??t but it didn’t take long before I was owning folks.

Played in a summer league the next summer and ended up getting a full ride to play ball in Texas. I know. “Cool story bra.” Just sayin, if a knucklehead non-genetically gifted late starter can get it done, shit, no reason why a young cat can’t dedicate himself to his passion and at least get a full ride out of it.

Shooters are not born, they are made. A free college education can be had along with having a ton of fun doing what you love.

No, that actually is a cool story bro. I always wanted to play college ball too growing up but I didn’t have the balls to go “all in” like you did. That’s awesome.

wow… thank you so much for posting this. Good for you. So what was your experience playing for texas? longhorns right?
Umm no. Re-read 1st line “Slow 6’2”. I played for Texas Weslyan University a small NAIA school at the time. They since went on to win a national championship years after I graduated. I did get to play against some bigitime D1 programs though. Houston Cougars,UNLV, Indianna, BYU, and so on. My first season we started out 13 - 2 and ranked in the top ten in the country and I was 6th man getting a ton of playing time. I was the zone buster on the team because there was no 3pt line in college yet. At that time I was thinking minimum about playing over seas after four years and “maybe” NBA. As it turned out, “dreaming” was more like it. Winter break we started playing the above mentioned teams in order to pay for the athletic program and went 0 for December. I was trying to stop 6’5" 220 lb gaurds that were fast as shit and strong as fuck. Right then and there I knew to take full advantage of the education and have as much fun as possible the remaining time I played.

Thanks. Yep, at the time I figured why the hell not? Ignorance of youth maybe. Figured I was going to work the rest of my life anyway. Only young once. That’s what I tell my kids now. One of my three has a real chance at D1 volleyball. 6’0" 145 freshman. A real beast out there. Genetically it helps that I marrried a girl on the women’s team in college, the “fast twitch” muscle fibers and “extra muscle” are now in effect. Ha. We travel with club volleyball and I encourage her to go “all in” so she has no regrets later in life. We sacrifice as a family now and do whatever in an effort to allow her AND her brother and sister to pursue their individual dreams. Once they decide they have had enough, then we move on to the next goal. Makes life worth getting up in the morning…
