I’m very grounded within myself, in no small part thanks to excelling in academic and social contexts and picking up new stuff pretty fast, also athletic stuff, although my physical prowess, so to speak, mainly stems from being very strong whilst having good cardiovascular performance. I’m a decent athlete, alright, I might’ve even been great at oly lifting and wasn’t too shabby at track and field, but that’s about it.
With that self-aggrandizing statement out of the way:
apart from a few of my teenage years, I never had any problems with someone being better than me. In fact, having been privately tutoring during high school and university and later on students whilst being a research scientist, helping other to achieve their potentials, I learned that, although I’m pretty good at anything I pick up, there’s always someone better than me in certain disciplines. This didn’t only serve as a reality check, but I also realized I like helping people realize their potentials (professionally, I’ve been leading teams for the past 3 years).
It so happened that I’d helped some guys beat former PRs of mine, some of them having been all the rage in my training social circle. PRs, my body, whatever are just snapshots. They can be taken away anytime (injury, illness, death …).
And no, I hadn’t got much positive feedback in my formative years as a teenager to warrant my positive outlook on things, nor was it all sunshine and rainbows - I think it’s how you look at life (and, of course, how you’re hardwired).
Also, I like, savor and relish competition, and, at times, pursue it quite aggressively, but for me it’s not about crushing my competitors, but trying to broaden my own boundaries. So, no positivist hogwash, here (and I usually do crush my competition, but I’m not gloating, afterwards and usually break their weaknesses down for them - you’d be surprised at how few of them actually apply that for their next prep. I’m not afraid to lose, there’s (almost) always a next time, eh?).
That’s why I never envied ‘users’, nor downplayed their achievements, but am awestruck by some of the physiques in the amateur and pro ranks (I’m a 60s/70s aficionado concerning bodybuilding physiques).
