Natural Living

I have lately been simplifying my life as much as possible. I’m also trying to live as close to the way we should as is practical. Thanks to the internet I have so much conflicting information its hard to know what you should do though. I’m sure some of you guys know a lot about this stuff, so I’ll start us off with a list of topics that I’m interested in:

What hygiene products do we need, ie, shampoo, deoderant, etc?
How much meat should we be eating?
Should we be using sunscreen?
Is organic produce necessary?

That should get us started. Very interested to hear from people that have looked into this stuff, especially ones that have experimented.

first thing to do is get rid of the internet

Haha, sometimes I think its a good idea, but its where the majority of my income and knowledge come from. Not ruling that out though…

Why do you want to do this? I was raised on a commune by a bunch of hippies who didn’t believe in anything artificial, didn’t believe in prescription or OTC drugs, only ate organic foods that they grew themselves and didn’t put anything in or on their bodies that contained chemicals or was chemically processed. didn’t wear leather or eat meat. They didn’t even believe in eating chocolate because of the refined sugar.

I know what you’re thinking what a great childhood I must have had! I never even tasted beef until I went to college. The horror! The horror!

now that I’m an adult I realize most of the measures they took were borderline nonsense. Even my mother has softened a bit on some of these issues now that she’s older. I still live a fairly holistic lifestyle. I eat only organic foods, I take lots of herbs and teas in place of OTC medicines and I can count on one hand the number of times I’ve voluntarily ingested a prescription drug.

But I wear deodorant and cologne and sunscreen. I eat meat, chocolate and other naughty things. Life’s too short dude. And I think you’ll find that trying to live a natural lifestyle is not as ``simple’’ as you think. If you’re doing it for some grand moral reason then go for it. but keep in mind that in the society we live in, it takes a lot of effort and money to avoid chemicals and processed foods, etc.

Pot is natural too but you should limit your intake for sure.

What hygiene products do we need? Do your pits smell if you don’t use deodorant? How about your breath if you don’t brush your teeth, and will your teeth rot?

Is skin cancer common and potentially deadly?

Will non organic products supply you with the same nutrients?

practical living is pretty simple. Just take a second to think about the consequences of your actions if you are really confused.

It’s a nice thought, trying to live close to nature. But as far as Natural goes, war is natural, strife is natural, peace and harmony are an aberration, a man made myth. Nobody ever lived in harmony with the land anywhere. Period.

What is natural? Look at the cat. In the winter time, wouldn’t it be “natural” for the cat to be outside freezing, starving, trying to catch a mouse or a squirrel so that it can eat and stay alive? Yeah, but the cat isn’t stupid, he’ll stay inside, cozy by the fire, eating his delicious canned food and getting fat. Nature’s way is to take the easiest, most confortable path. Nature is lazy. Nature is selfish and stupid.

Those fat cows who pass for people these days, who waddle down to McDonalds to stuff their face, they are the natural ones. They are living in harmony with nature. We who eat our lean meats and vegetables, and pretend like it tastes good, we aren’t natural. I think what makes us better than the animals, what makes us men, is the fact that we do what isn’t easy, what isn’t in our self-interest.

Personally, I think waste is a sin, wasting food, water, resources. Doesn’t matter if global warming is real or not, doesn’t matter if the environmentalists are full of shit or not. God gave us a beautiful world, we ought to take care of it, and God gave us a abundant resources, so we ought to not take them for granted.

Use only what you need, maybe a little bit extra for entertainment purposes, but try to leave the world in at least as good a shape as you found it. And for god’s sake, wash yourself and put on some deodorant. You don’t have to cake it on but nobody wants to smell your dirty hippy ass.

Damn right.

Interesting points. I didn’t mean to say that I’ll be doing this to the extreme, just little things. I recently got rid of a huge amount of stuff that I had and I feel a lot better now that its gone.

I’ve also been following the “Getting Things Done” principles. These things have made me considerably more relaxed and happy and I’m just trying to continue that.

I guess I’ll just try and gradually remove things from my life that I don’t use or need anymore…

I tried natural deodorant for a few months. I even used a few different brands. They all sucked horribly. I had to put it on several times a day and it still wasn’t that effective.

sounds like ur complicating ur life…read the tao, and ull achieve simplification.

To be natural:

1.Need- none.

2.Meat- as much as you can catch that day.

3.Sunscreen- None. Cancer is as natural as anything else.

4.Organics- Sure, why not. Good luck forraging. Hope you live somewhere with a year round growing season.

It may be simple, but not easy.

So far, everyone is just talking about food and personal hygiene products.

If you truly want to live the simple life, you should:

Throw out the TV
Throw out the cell phone
Walk or bike everywhere
Take tote bags with you when you shop
Compost your veggie waste
Stop buying crap you don’t really need

I will make sure I do that soon.
