I do not like the whole seperation between natural and ‘regular’ BB’rs, for a couple reasons:

First, it’s almost impossible to tell who is 100% natural, I’m not naive and I find it hard to trust someone from face value when I don’t know them.

Secondly, it’s pointless racking your brain over it, since the guys competing in the olympia would most definitely still be bigger than all the pro natural bodybuilders if they also chose to stay natural themselves.

They have the best genetics, which is why they have the chance to be in the OLYMPIA not some natural show where instead they would only earn 5-10% of the money they currently make, whats the point?

So I would say to just keep an open mind and listen to all the big guys, ‘natural’ or not.

The thing i think about is how many people with outstanding genetics are out there…? People think bodybuilding is weird as it is, it has a small following. Could be thousands of Ronnie type genetic freaks out there that don’t even know it.

People who have the best genetics for bodybuilding would be very easy to spot even if they don’t lift a whole lot. They’re the kind of people that put most gym-goers to shame at a very young age with very little experience.
They’re not 5-10 and 145lbs at the age of 15, that’s for sure.
That simply is NOT true. Genetics need to be thought of as not just what someone has with zero training but also how quickly they adapt. A whole lot of people with great genetics may be skinny with no training, but they will also be the first to blow up when they do train and eat enough.

Good point. I remember Mike Mentzer often used 70’s bodybuilder Roy Callender as an example of this. Mentzer described his pre-training physique as looking like an Aushwitz victim and claimed he was the thickest bodybuilder he ever saw when in shape. Lou and Arnold were skinny too as teenagers.

Arnold was not a skinny teenager, I’ve seen photos of him at age 16 and he was obviously more muscular than your average 16 yo.
I do agree however that some people with good genetics for bodybuilding don’t look like much before they start lifting. Maybe its because they are so far from an ideal bodybuilding lifstyle (diet, physical activity, sleep wise).

I think this is an interesting discussion though. Should guys starting out seek out natural BBers for a more realistic goal? or should they set their sights high and if they don’t reach the level of their hero at least they didnt limit themselves?

I know people with the mindset that you just “have” to use steroids or you will never know what you could acheive.
But
I agree with what someone else said, if you do use steroids you wont know what you could have achieved naturally.

Arnold also started juicing around 15 years old -lol. There’s one kid at my gym, about 16 as well, did one cycle last year, put on about 15 lbs, and now, although he says he regrets it, thinks he looks ‘horrible’ because he’s back to making slow and steady progress like all the other high school kids in the gym (doesn’t stop him from sporting a ‘wife-beater’ and flexing in the mirrors every workout though).

Exactly.

For example, one could consider how skinny Flex Wheeler was.
Or Sammir Bannout… or Dorian.

Doesn’t get much better than this.

Or this.

Man I remember first seeing a picture of ulysses when I first started reading about weight training, I weighed like 110lbs and he seemed so massive and unreal.

Now while he still looks awesome it doesn’t seem as unrealistic as I first thought =)

Just gave that guy a Google search and no homo (well, a little homo) but wow.

J-ROd’s definitely one of my favs. If all the damn natty organizations weren’t so busy putting each other down, we could see him go up against Cordova. That’d be something.

Got a new one of Jeff Willet:

From his Blog on being Natural:

" I also didnâ??t know about the use of performance enhancing drugs in the various levels of the sport.

I remember when I first became aware that many top guys in the sport were using steroids. It was like finding out there wasnâ??t a Santa Claus. It disappointed me but didnâ??t discourage me. Thankfully I had a strong belief in myself and found role models that helped me stay true to my dreams and I continued going for the coveted IFBB pro card “my way.”
