Nas' New Album

Bingo. I am sure nearly everyone here just downloads their stuff for free because I did the same all of the way through school…however, that action has it good and bad effects. The good is that downloading music online has changed the recording industry and forced them to not only face the fact that prices for cd’s were way too high (getting to as much as 20 bucks a pop), but the fact that it is now possible for an artist who is an unknown to become known by simply releasing his own product and getting it heard.

The negative is that cd sales no longer drive what music the record companies search for and produce. There is money in “ringtones” and the ability to only buy singles on line instead of the whole cd will no doubt lead to one hit wonders actually sticking around a little longer than they could have before.

I am not sure what the solution is or if there really needs to be one. The music industry needed to change. They were ripping us off every time they released a $40 2-disc cd package with only 2 songs worth listening to. They were also ripping the artists off by only allowing LESS THAN 8% of CD sales to actually go to the artist themselves…which then had to cover their own production, videos, pr, advertisements and image…which is why groups like TLC were basically flat broke even though they were considered the most successful female R&B group at one time.

Unfortunately, it also means artists who may have had a chance are now being phased out because no one who actually loves Hip Hop from its roots is actually BUYING the damn music.

Woo! I bought

Food & Liquor
The Cool
Hip Hop is Dead
Planning on buying Untitled and DMX’s CD if he would ever come out with it.

and then a few songs from a few CDs.

I don’t think we have a problem in people only buying a few songs from CDs. Our problem is people not buying the songs.

Those aren’t bad cds, but there’s so much better out there.

Try anything from:

9th Wonder
Kaze
Skyzoo
Gang Starr
Kenn Starr
One Be Lo
Blackstar
Binary Star
Chaundon
Little Brother
Zion I & the Grouch

Just for a few examples. This is the kind of HIP-HOP (most of the shit discussed in this thread isn’t hip-hop,) that I try to persuade people to get turned on to. It’s a bit more obscure, but not impossible to find by any means.

Then you really don’t know shit, do you? You can’t claim something is “dead” when you don’t even know what it is or even name a classic example.

I knew you were narrow-minded with your listening choices, but I didn’t realize you limited yourself this much.

And there’s nothing wrong with only listening to a limited selection of music, but then you really have no business running your mouth in as many music threads as you do. Go listen to Weezy, kid, and stay out of conversations you are clueless about.

you guys wanna listen to backpack storytelling rap go ahead. i told yall a million times its dead so dont be so sour that no one is making it anymore and everyone that does sucks at it.

backpack nerds

I love how in several threads you throw about the backpack label. You probably couldn’t even define “backpack”. Hell, Lupe is damn near backpack, but you would never admit that.

judging by 781 posts especially in music threads, he seemingly accepts what trl throws at him as the best thing going around i.e in another thread calling weezy the greatest rapper ever, no.

i agreed with his points saying that soulja boy has as much reason to be in rap as nas, however back pack rap ain’t dead and i pretty much disagree with everything else he has had to say.

story telling isn’t dead, the only problem with hip hop is the over saturation of the radio’s and music video shows with ring tone rappers.

i don’t have a problem with ring tone rap as i dont want too learn quantum physics when I’m trying to ‘mack bitches’ however i understand other rappers frustration that music they slave over including intelligent content and substance gets overlooked by the general population. Now the people complaining about this situation how many cd’s did you go out and buy last year?

I’m not preaching a holier than thou attitude but you cant sit there and complain that your favorite musicians/artist album gets pushed back, they aren’t promoting it enough, not getting on the radio if YOU DON’T BUY THE CD AS WELL, when you purchase an album it’s showing the record company that you are interested in that artist, that you want to hear and see more from that artist and similar artists.

Now the reason why soulja boy was able to stay #1 for so long was because teenage girls were buying the songs off itunes/cd’s from the stores.

You know why teenage girls are the biggest buyers of to be frankly honest subpar music because record companies know if they market it to that population they are the most likely to go purchase the album and affiliated merchandise meaning they are getting a bigger return. Music is pretty much all about the profit margin.

I know big paragraph to people i know that aren’t going to bother reading it, I’m sure you are not smart enough to comprehend the general concepts i put forth in this post anyway

I’m done with this thread, why does every hip hop thread either end up turning into a soulja boy vs hip hop thread, or everyone against livefrom781, 781 maybe you should spend some time listening to the classics then come back too hip hop threads.

The hip hop classic they named I’m pretty sure even kids who rode the small bus in high school know the words they get played that much. I’m not a weezy hater I own his whole catalogue because he does make enjoyable music to listen too however claiming he is the greatest rapper alive when he’s obviously stole jay-z style.

and taken the dip set swag and come out a mediocre hybrid you really need to rethink your preferences and make sure you arent a 13 year old girl from the OC and wondering if your going to be the first person at your school with that new shawty lo song, so you know can seem super cool and maybe get asked too the formal by ben affleck and you know have a happy life and yeah

for a point of reference yes i know jay-z stole multiple people’s styles and bit multiple lines, so dont bothering bringing this up, i’m out of this thread till people actually discuss Nas’ latest cd

and yes ether makes the soul burn slooooooooooow[/quote]

And for the record, this is one of the better posts in this thread, and Prof’s response was a good one, too.

I was just naming ones from the last year I had gotten. I’ve gotten a few others and I wasn’t saying they were the best. I only really listen to a few rappers but I have heard some of those and they are pretty good.

I just realized how many “stars” their are in underground rap, lol. But you for got to add Jedi Mind Tricks.

So you guys inspired me to find out more about this Soulja vs Boy Ice T beef. After watching this youtube stuff, despite Soulja boy’s ignant talk he seems like the more mature one.

Hip Hop is very much alive if not more than ever, the difference now is that it’s a genre of music vs. a bunch of people trying to identify with it as a culture. So now anybody can go make their style of hip hop they way that they want to. Whether it’s some wrestler, strongman, australian, pop artist or young black kid living up to everyone’s stereotypes. It’s not limited to someone with baggy jeans, a hoodie, and spray paint trying to act extra black.

I have no available mental image for “extra black”. Could someone help me out with some pictures?

agreed my friend who probably is the biggest retard when it comes to logic cant understand why they wont play trae on the radio or why he cant buy a lot of cd’s in australia. YET he ONLY DOWNLOADS music, In his life time he has purchased around 5 cd’s. I’d list all the cd’s I’ve bought in the last twelve months but thats when i pretty much decided to start a cd collection so it may seem too much but here we go

scarface’s catalog
rakim’s catalog
jay-z’s catalog
lil wayne’s catalog(yes even including hot boys albums)
nas’ collection
both notorious B.I.G(hey life after death is $40)
little brothers entire catalog
common’s catalog
talib kweli’s catalog
mos def’s catalog
beanie sigel’s catalog
freeway’s catalog
gza’s catalog
method man’s catalog
raekwon’s catalog
redman’s catalog
rza’s catalog(ordered his latest album just waiting on amazon to send it)
ghostface killah’s catalog
majority killah priests catalog
dizzee rascal’s catalog
z-ro’s catalog
trae’s catalog
including guerilla maab and abn albums
i’ve got a couple kool g rap albums
devin the dude’s catalog
all of outkasts catalog
all of ugk’s catalog
young jeezy’s catalog
ice cube’s catalog
both nwa albums
immortal technique(still waiting on the 3rd world to arrive)
i have various krs one albums
10 too short albums
the majority of joe buddens work
some ice tea floating around
hell i’ve even got grandmaster flash and the furious five, the album with the message
i’ve got both dre albums(two copies of the chronic, funny story)
styles catalog
jadakiss catalog
sheeks catalog
memphis bleeks catalog
have the earlier eminem albums as i didnt like much after the 8 mile album dropped
various boot camp click albums

then i got various albums but cant remember what artists or albums, lately purchased the cool kids - bake sale ep, kidz in the hall - the in crowd, blood raw - my life the true testimony and would at least tell you guys too purchase all three, blood raw really caught me off guard its a pretty dope album although its very similar to a young jeezy album so dont expect the worlds best lyricist but entertaining music

now i really believe they could lower the price of albums, if albums were $10 each i’m pretty sure most people would go back to buying albums.

Also i believe nas has a point in the song hero, referring to them censoring the name of his album…yeah calling your album nigger is a lame publicity stunt HOWEVER imagine if they censored NWA Fuck The Police, think about new kids coming into music seeing people that are trying new artistic ideas and seeing established artists like nas being told he cant even call his album nigger, imagine how discouraging that would be to new artists.

also on the point of new artist imagine coming into the current climate seeing artists with content only selling a maximum of 400,000. Then seeing another ‘artist’ making a coon out of himself only too sell a million plus, artists that used too sell platinum are struggling to break the 500,000 mark.

I agree that the music industry has been raping us for at least the past 20 years, and they needed to keep up with the times. Seems like jay-z is backing a new idea(havent really kept up with details) and its encouraging to see that they are looking for new ideas, but i dont see why new albums especially in australia need to cost $20-30, why they cant lower the price to $10-15, sure a lot of people get fed off the artist’s plate but there’d have to be a way for them to make reforms making it cheaper
