Myth on Karate and Taekwando

Now im interested in taking up a martial arts, and after reading up etc. i find myself interested in taekwando, karate and judo. (ive a bit of experience in boxing, had to give it up due to a very impt singaporean exam. failing = no good jobs, no university etc. btw i did pretty well. ;D ) well i may be a bit ambitious, but id love to learn a striking art and a grappling/throwing art so that id be well rounded.

however, after telling ppl i wanted to take up taekwando/karate, many ppl just bash it saying that its too “stiff”, there isnt any flow in it like muay thai, its too not flexible etc. so can anyone debunk these myths, cause id rather take either of these up then muay thai. (i thnk muay thai is too brutal for me. im too much of a pussy to take it up >< )

Your time will be better spent sampling a class from a reputable school and deciding whether or not it is for you.

Both TKD and Karate tend to be sports oriented here. You saying you are too much of a pussy to do Muay Thai does not bode well for you as a martial artist of any kind. Also stop making threads about essentially the same thing.

stop posted and get out there and find out. Are you going to asks us to punch and kick for you too?

well the thing is. i CANT. thing about national service is. you kinda give two years of your lives to the singapore army. if youre fighting fit, you have to stay in camp from Mond to Fri, most of the time even Saturdays.(nights out are determined by the higher ups moods too) So theres really no time for me to go out and learn. id really love to, but i just cant. so guys, get it?? and i still have about a year and a half to go, and i just want to learn as much as i can, and make the best choice in my intrests and so on. the only reason i can post these few days is that i got a week off because ive been helping out in yog the past week. ive read up on threads here and i havnt found something addresing this. ive tried the most awesome search function too.

so i hope you guys understand, im sure it has been asked before. but ive tried searching for smth similar and couldnt find it. well its better to look like a fool for 5mins then to be a fool forever right.

Go to both schools and watch and take a couple free classes from both. You probably won’t be able to decide unless you mix it up.

There’s a saying in traditional arts, coming from this story.

Master is asked “What is the best martial art?”

Answer: “THE ONE THAT YOU DO.”

Just do something.

You have weekends, use them. If you’re in any kind of combat vocation there will be times, even on weekends that aren’t burned, that you won’t have much gas in the tank to seriously practice a given art. This doesn’t mean you can’t show up for class and get the feel of what you’re going to be doing.

Your questions are phrased in generalities, but martial arts don’t work that way because schools differ in their approach. Hit a few classes and see if it’s for you, that’s really all I have to say.

You’re in the singapore army and you can’t find someone to teach you how to fight?

Sometimes studying martial arts in their country of origin gets romanticized, justly or unjustly, but I can tell you I’ve watched a few Kyoukushin karate classes here in Japan and these guys are as tough as they come. They pound on each other’s torsos like they’re sides of beef, axe-kick each other in the face, and the instructor basically puts them through hell. I don’t know what the Kyokushin classes are like in North America but what I saw really impressed me…

Take filipino martial arts.

Some background for clarification. Singaporean males do 1.75 to 2 years worth of National Service, ie the Army/Navy/Airforce whatever. Not all vocations are combat based, in fact I believe most aren’t. We have clerical work (privates through to officers), logistics etc. More importantly, no there is no combat culture in any vocation or any camp except wherever they train Combat instructors.

My NS career was as follows: 3 months Basic Training, 9 months Officer Cadet School, 9 months Basic Training Instructor. I got a few lessons in BT, where I was taught to throw a jab and swing a rubber rifle around. In Advanced training (taken in OCS), I learned to breakfall, a bunch of IMO highly ineffective wristlock maneuvers, and several bastardised Jiu Jitsu locks. I knew more about BJJ than the instructors despite my training at the time being limited to ‘watching MMA’. That last part was not a joke.

The singapore army places emphasis on endurance and field tactics, not CQC. Combat fit NSmen stick around for 2 years max, so it’s understandable.

yea what rundy said to fighting irish and those thinking the same thing. there is a chance to become a combat instructor, but you had to have a certain degree of training (must have a yellow belt at least, which i didnt)

ok and good idea to go watch or join a few classes and all. and alright sorry for the repeated questions yknow. thanks for taking the time to answer them. (:

Ok. So you’re telling me that in the Singapore Army, its not possible for this guy to seek someone out that could teach him how to fight? It’s impossible?

Because most armies DON’T stress CQC, but there are still people that teach it that I’m sure would be willing to help you.

uhm yea there are probably people who could teach me, like i mentioned, close combat instructors. they do teach us some basic stuff like jabs and some kicks in the first two mths of enlistment. (about 8 lessons) but the thing is, not all units get taught the advanced stuff after that. and in army, we’re kinda confined by the schedule? so you cant go wherever you want and do whatever you want. and also, these close combat instructors are posted to every unit, they are at their hq? sooooo, yea. and trust me. they probably wont wanna waste their time on some private asking them to give me free lessons. the guys in the army treasure their free times very, VERY much. (:

of course there are some people in my unit who knows a thing or two. and i could ask them. yup. thats about it.

Don’t you guys employ experts in cane-fighting?

That’s pretty much what I’m saying. I did most of the combat curriculum as an officer cadet, it was a crash course and doesn’t teach you much.

These were my sentiments at the beginning of the thread.

well fightingirish, i read some of your posts, and you know your stuff. i wont argue with that. ive never been someone brave or daring sadly. well i hope to prove you wrong someday then.
