well the thing is. i CANT. thing about national service is. you kinda give two years of your lives to the singapore army. if youre fighting fit, you have to stay in camp from Mond to Fri, most of the time even Saturdays.(nights out are determined by the higher ups moods too) So theres really no time for me to go out and learn. id really love to, but i just cant. so guys, get it?? and i still have about a year and a half to go, and i just want to learn as much as i can, and make the best choice in my intrests and so on. the only reason i can post these few days is that i got a week off because ive been helping out in yog the past week. ive read up on threads here and i havnt found something addresing this. ive tried the most awesome search function too.
so i hope you guys understand, im sure it has been asked before. but ive tried searching for smth similar and couldnt find it. well its better to look like a fool for 5mins then to be a fool forever right.
You’re in the singapore army and you can’t find someone to teach you how to fight?
Christ.

Some background for clarification. Singaporean males do 1.75 to 2 years worth of National Service, ie the Army/Navy/Airforce whatever. Not all vocations are combat based, in fact I believe most aren’t. We have clerical work (privates through to officers), logistics etc. More importantly, no there is no combat culture in any vocation or any camp except wherever they train Combat instructors.
My NS career was as follows: 3 months Basic Training, 9 months Officer Cadet School, 9 months Basic Training Instructor. I got a few lessons in BT, where I was taught to throw a jab and swing a rubber rifle around. In Advanced training (taken in OCS), I learned to breakfall, a bunch of IMO highly ineffective wristlock maneuvers, and several bastardised Jiu Jitsu locks. I knew more about BJJ than the instructors despite my training at the time being limited to ‘watching MMA’. That last part was not a joke.
The singapore army places emphasis on endurance and field tactics, not CQC. Combat fit NSmen stick around for 2 years max, so it’s understandable.
Ok. So you’re telling me that in the Singapore Army, its not possible for this guy to seek someone out that could teach him how to fight? It’s impossible?
Because most armies DON’T stress CQC, but there are still people that teach it that I’m sure would be willing to help you.
That’s pretty much what I’m saying. I did most of the combat curriculum as an officer cadet, it was a crash course and doesn’t teach you much.
These were my sentiments at the beginning of the thread.
