My Training Scares the Customers?

your tone has completely changed since the start of this post. You sound downright depressed man.

Yes, your lifts suck, but you’re workin on em and making progress, thats more than a lot of people here. And yeah, your a twig, but 130-150 since september shows that you’re on the right track.

We’ve all been there. Some just can’t admit it
Yea really man, it sounds like you are making progress and have dedication, and like the guy above said we were all beginners at one time. Don’t be so hard on yourself, Opener. Hell, I was a sloppy mess when I walked into the gym last August.

Maybe there is just so many old fat women at your gym they get scared when someone actually lifts weights. Hell, some gyms do not even allow deadlifts…figure that out.

I love T-Nation, and doing what it takes to bulk up, but I don’t want to come off as an ass that’s trying to sound all “tuff” and badass. I just want to clear that up.

…and you have cleared that up. But you did start a discussion and where that discussion heads is largely out of control of the thread starter. I don’t think you are trying to be “tuff”, but I do think you were probably overzealous in your training actions and that alone is what lead anyone to say something.

Dropping the weights real loud or making an effort to be noticed in the current world of “fitness family centers” is going to do nothing but draw negative attention. That is why I quit doing any real lifting at places like that and can only hope I can continue to find ‘real’ places to lift in the future.

You will find that many of those “fitness people” are more likely to speak up when you are actually lifting much more than they can and are more developed than they are or what they think they can achieve. Most of it is jealousy unless you are specifically doing something obnoxious.
Thank you sir. I’ll continue eating my steaks now. I appreciate these motivating words.

Again…

The “Gold’s” franchises some of you guys are running into are much different than the one’s I’ve been to (and by looking at Jay Cutler in his videos, in Las Vegas).

Again…they are individual franchises that tend to be responsive to a community.

That goes for ANY franchise gym. The problem is, MOST of these communities seem to be turning into that. The 24 Hour Fitness I used to go to in Texas was one of the best gyms I’ve been to. That was mostly because of the people who used it. The old people and soccer moms were equally balanced with the serious trainers, many of which who competed (some who moved to Cali and are now more well known). Where I am now, the people who are significantly developed are far fewer in number. I would assume much of the country is becoming the same way. I doubt there are even two guys who train at my local Gold’s who can bench over 315lbs for reps. It is truly pathetic and you can give up expecting to get any motivation from your surroundings in a place like that.

I assume you got to a gym that caters to an older crowd, kinda like a unisex curves. I’d get out of there. You’re gonna be stronger than that place can cater to within the next year or so anyway. Good luck.

Sadly there goes my chances of ever meeting another serious lifter for a while.

Prof:

Agree…

There are 4 Gold’s within a 10 mile radius of me, and some are more “Foo-foo” than others, depending on the area clientele.

Also, not to hijack, but Prof.X, are you talking about the 24 next to City Streets? If so there are still some MONSTERS that go there.

wow… I workout at the YMCA you guys realy killed my dream I always thought once I got stronger I would go to a better gym and there would be people who actualy deadlift and squat…

now my life is meaningless

Not necessarily. There are hardcore gyms all around the world, and you can find one if you look. You will probably have to drive much further than your local 24 hour or gold’s, but if you really wanna train with experienced lifters, its worth it to make the trip every so often.

Good luck finding a real gym now a days. No more rusty bars and broken A/C units.

They tore down the City Streets I believe, but yeah, the same place. It has always been home to some of the larger bodybuilders in south Houston. I hope to eventually move back so I get back into the groove of things. I miss being around people who were at least my size and bigger who were in better shape. It was extra motivation every time I trained.

Just a little while ago I drove by what used to be the powerhouse a few miles from where I live and it’s now some family fitness center. It’s been a long time since I trained at a commercial gym, but apparently it’s getting even fluffier than I realized. I’m sure there are still “real” gyms around, but it looks like all the money is in these health club type outfits now. At least that’s how it seems.

Yea, the city streets is now a golf superstore, I live a couple of blocks from there. If anyone’s ever in Houston and wants to train at a serious weightroom, this place is your best bet.

I THINK that the “Gold’s” near me are “saved” from a lot of “Foo-foo” because there are a number of things like “Curves”, “Lady Fitness” and local “Family Centers”.

There is even a “Hardcore” gym (24 hour Key Coded access) that has seemed to survive.

Mufasa

seems to me planet fitness business model is spreading

Assuming this is not another troll job was it a random personal trainer or was it gym management giving you a hard time?

If it was a PT ignore her. If it was gym management get a refund.

True deal.

And if it was some PT, I would complain to management.

Post a video of your squat and DL form if it’s so perfect. Lets rule out operator error before condemning the gym. I remember when I was a punk ass teenager I was much less receptive to advice then I should have been, and I sure as hell wasn’t the only teenager to ever “know it all” at that age.

You guys should try university gyms if you happen to live in university towns. Since the sports teams work out there, they generally tolerate heavy lifting. At mine, even though the new management is trying to turn it into another “Fitness World”, they’ll still never be able to get rid of the power platforms and squat cages.
