Deadlift videos: new and old

Suit Deadlifting 8 21 09 - YouTube (8/21/09)
Sumo Deadlift 480 3 8 09 - YouTube (3/8/09)

Posted a video of my second time sumo deadlifting and then today’s pulling. Man I had a cluster fuck of a sumo deadlift a few months ago. Because the technique is starting to get a lot better I feel like my strength is going to start improving at a pretty fast clip for awhile on this lift.

I don’t see the difference.

Damn nice pulling!

Looking good man! Keep up the hard work and the strength will come .

so that’s what you did when i left. i thought that you were gonna lift with the cool kids, you know the people who decide to yell at each other as they spot each other on pullups.

i’m telling uncle sheiko. hes gonna be pissed. not doing the prescribed number of lunges and also waiting 2.538 minutes too long to take your shake = definitely gonna lose muscle and start competing in the 125 division.

The cool kids are out of my league. I don’t know how to handle their approach to pull-ups for starters.

You don’t even know how to contact Uncle Sheiko and you are right, he would be pissed.

You might be thinking of the 123 weight class.

Week 8, Day 3

Bench with chains (grip 1 inch inside rings, 88lbs of chains, half on floor at bottom, all off floor at top)
1x5x95@7
1x5x115@8
1x3x135@9
1x5x115@8.5
1x5x115@9.5
1x5x105@8.5

Squat
1x5x210 (50%)
1x4x250 (60%)
2x3x295 (70%)
6x3x335 (80%) [belt for these 6 sets]

2 Board Press (paused, grip 1 inch inside rings)
1x5x185@9.5
1x5x170@9
3x5x160@8.5, 8, 9

SSB Box Squats (paused, beltless)
5x5x255

Pull-ups (4 fist width grip)
3x5
2x4
1x3
(26 total reps, 6 sets)

Bench Pin Presses (grip 2 inches inside rings, pause on pins, pins half way between chest & lockout #10)
1x8x135
1x4x165
4,2x195 (rest pause)

I suppose I didn’t predict I would have this much trouble on these bench exercises. My triceps obviously have a shit load of room for improvement. I think this program has some real promise because I can work equally hard on bottom end and top end strength for awhile until I start to get a fair amount stronger.

Tried box squats for the first time today and they were a lot easier than I thought they’d be. I grabbed the only sturdy box that is at the gym and it put me at right around a parallel squats. I put a piece of foam on the box and then put some boards under my feet so I would be squatting lower in effect. Once I had everything set up I was squatting just below parallel. I would squat down to the box, relax my hips, wait a couple of seconds, tighten my core, and then squat up. Felt quite good, think I will keep these for a few weeks.

I felt more balanced on pull-ups today. Wasn’t leading to one side so much.

That’s a big PR, haha, and nice work on the lifting.

It takes awhile to figure out what weights to use on a new exercise, but you will get the hang of it. I told you the 2-board could end up be a humbling experience. Also, you can move your grip around if you want just to change the angle of attack.

How was the benching with chains? I’ve never tried that before.

One recommendation, you may want to try lowering the weight some here. Think of it the same as Wendlers 5/3/1 idea of taking 85%/90%. Not specifically a % of your 1RM, but the idea of leaving lots ot room for progress whether it be reps or weight.

Here’s looking to 1500! (gotta have goals)

you’ve been here far too long to get your 1000 posts. i think that means you have to accept my T-Nation shirt as your reward.

Yeah that PR makes me question my priorities a little bit.

Yeah you were definitely right about the 2-board. I think I am starting to get the hang of this workout. And good idea about the grip changes.

Benching with that much chain weight compared to regular weight was a very interesting experience. Certainly has some similarities to benching in a shirt. I have to think the reverse band benches that novaeer is so fond gives the feel of a shirted bench much better, but for right now the chains will have to do.

I am thinking I will lower the weight by about 20 pounds on the pin presses. I just couldn’t imagine a world where 195 would be that heavy. But I was living in that world on Sunday, haha.

1500 by the end of the year, YEAAAHHH BUUUDDDYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY

You saw me on Sunday and managed to forget how small I am . . . we don’t wear the same size!

Week 9, Day 1

Bench (paused, grip 1 inch inside rings)
1x3x165@7
3x3x185@8
1x3x190@8
1x3x195@8.5
1x3x205@8.5

Squat
1x5x215 (50%)
1x5x260 (60%)
5x5x300 (70%) [last 4 sets belted]

Lat Pulldowns (wide-grip)
1x20x80
2x20x90

Sumo Good Mornings (beltless)
5x5x185

Barbell Rows
1x5x135
1x5x155
3x5x165

Had to move this session up 1 day and was quite pleased with how everything went. The last couple of weeks wiped me out pretty good so I definitely wanted the full 72 hours of rest, but was fine today without it. Now I have some resting time before I deadlift next.

I am going to throw in some extra back work and really try to turn my upper back into a strength rather than a glaring weakness. I am making it a priority. I think my deadlift will jump and my bench too.

I am figuring out the RTS system now. I was very conservative in my set weights today and it paid off because I set a PR on the last set and it was pretty easy.

I was actually excited to find out just how weak I am on barbell rows. Going to put 100 pounds on this exercise in the next year with strict form.

Going to take it a little easier on squat accessory exercises this week. My low back could use a little bit of a break. I will also use the belt more for squatting the next couple of weeks. On Sunday I will start squatting in the suit with wraps on and straps down. Will be interesting to see where I am at in that thing. Practiced my knee wrapping for a good hour last night in anticipation. I am getting a whole lot better at it. I’ll try to get some video of the squatting on Sunday.

hey man, watched your videos, pretty good.

congrats on the posts PR. keep up the great work man, i’m trying to join the 500DL club.

well, you’re going into the 198 class so you have to move up from your medium shirts…to a xl, the same size that andrew and that decline bench screamer guy wears. then your bench will jump by at least 150.2875lbs.

Haha thanks on the congrats! I know you’ll get that 500 pound deadlift, and you’ll probably do it at 90kg. Keeping kicking ass man.

I believed everything until you got to the 3rd decimal place. Too precise to be true, DAMNIT!

maybe i’ll use percentages next time then.
